Bradford Winch Meet

I would like to record my thanks to the Bradford for the hospitality they showed to all and sundry at the winch meet over the past three weeks. There was always a friendly welcome, and they were very generous with the use of their ropes in the various entrances. Thanks, lads and lasses - it was much appreciated.

Many thanks, too, from my father's next door neighbour, who took her daughter down and had a great time.

Thanks also from Black Rose CC. 5 of us went down Dis on Thursday exiting from different entrances.
2 via Bar Pot, 2 from Marilyn, 1 on the winch.
Special thanks for cajoling our non-caving member to go down on the winch despite serious reservations.

The Gaping Gill winch meet was indeed a fantastic opportunity, I went with a group of friends and between us we did a number of different entrances and exits while I took the easy option of using the winch both in and out. Many thanks to everyone who was so helpful and made us all feel so welcome.

As some one who is hooked on caving but as a relative novice finds it hard to find many opportunities to get underground. I cheekily ask do you have any other opportunities for members of the public / non club members to take part in (fairly easy) trips thoughout the year.

Many thanks again Bom

Last year there was the Try Caving event where the public could take up the opportunity to go underground.. Not sure if any clubs are running similar style events this year or not? Chances are some will be, might be worth keeping your eyse open on here..

Cool that definitely sounds like the kind of thing  :), I will keep my eyes peeled, any idea who ran it? Maybe I could get in touch and see if they have any future plans.

Bradford Pothole club (the same friendly people who ran the winch meet) run two sorts of trips - on Sat, it's harder trips, on Sun it's easier, usually horizontal, trips, eg Valley entrance on 8th Jun, Sell Gill (easy SRT) on 20 July. Eventually they'd ask you to join, once you'd done enough trips to be sure you're really hooked.

If you want to do it the expensive way, SPICE http://www.spiceuk.com/ run occasional trips - a lot of people I know (including me) got into caving that way. The Manchester group have got a P8 trip coming up.

And as others have said, google on "try caving" (with quotes round, and a UK search) and the 'try caving site is the first hit, with lots of info.

Just to add the YSS run two try caving events for novices a year, the last two proving popular at around 18 people. We are running our SRT beginners training this weekend as the next step for those wanting to join. Check us out at www.yssuk.com or the main try caving website that has all clubs try caving dates.
