End of black country coal

End of Welsh Coal too, almost.

With only one deep pit left open, Welsh anthracite is becoming scarce. Earlier this year no coal merchant within 20 miles of my home had any. In the end I bought some Welsh Anthracite from Gloucestershire, which I have to say is about the best quality I've ever seen. My local supplier now has some again but it is not the Glos standard. Yes, I imported Welsh anthracite from England back into Wales. There are open cast sources of lower quality coal in Wales and I think sometimes it is "blended" with the deep mined crystalline type.

Retail cost of a 1 kWH from coal is currently about 6p. The wholesale price of gas now and retail price of kerosene per kWH has now fallen back to the same 6p ballpark. Hardwood logs are slightly dearer per kWH but look nice. So why do I get an electricity bill at work with business electricity priced at 75p per kWH, less the last gasp of the government winter subsidy. How do retail power suppliers get away with this.

& they have nuclear power plants & water storage systems that cost a lot more to switch on & off at peak times.

Yes the newspaper articles are pay to view, but you can generally work out which ones you want before signing up.
