Fixed ladder on Swildons 20

Read the spoof on another thread BUT;

Last time I was down the bottom of the 20 waiting to ascend I noticed that on the left hand side of the passage at the bottom of the pitch (as you face the pitch) there are the remains of some studs protruding form the rock. Did there used to be a fixed ladder here? If not, does anyone know what the studs were for? Rescue purposes maybe?
