Following on from Chris Jones recent talk , I'm pleased to inform  you the book as Chris mentioned produced by CATHMS is now available post free ?21.00

The Red Earth Revisited,  Authors Brian D Cubbon, Peter R Sandbach & Colin P Woollard, Hardback, A4 , 274pp, Colour and B&W photos.

The book describes in detail the iron mining industry of Furness, the mines, owners, management, employment and production of iron ore in this area it complements and updates  Dave Kelly's "Red Earth" which was published  over 20 years ago long out of print, a lot more research and discoveries have taken place effectively this being a rewritten second edition.

It starts with the Geology of the area and then goes on to discuss, processing of the ore,  describes the mines,  each has a National Grid Reference which enables the reader to locate the sites , this is followed by transport details which includes the Furness Railway , throughout the book is richly illustrated by colour and historical black and white photographs with updated maps  . Today sadly there are few traces of  industry which gave employment to many ,who mined Haematite, a particularly rich form of iron ore found in this part of what was once North Lancashire.
