I was lucky enough to be invited on this project to assist Robbie with photos. It was my first experience of lava tubes and certainly something I'd like to do again. Some were over 300 degC, making for some pretty challenging shots (especially as the reflective suits were mostly reserved for the Italians).
Hats off to La Venta for organising such a multifaceted team, including LiDAR drone scanners, many highly renowned scientists and even a portable SEM (scanning electron microscope) at base camp! I'm sure there will be much more PR and papers off the back of this and hopefully a return trip!
