Don't wear wellies! Here, we spend as much time hiking to the entrance as in the cave... and then we generally don't encounter pools (just mud). Hiking boots are the rage here, altho some do wear wellies.

Have you all got super big wellies or have I just got very fat legs...
Its all i can do to squeeze my legs into my wellies...there would be no room at all for my oversuit to be tucked in!

Nobodies ever accussed me of having thin legs and no way can I get me and my wellies inside my oversuit. Oversuit fits nicely in wellies and never had a major problem with muck getting in them.

Outside,
stops water pouring in on cascades, and grit going in, and revents snagging of top boots on rocks in crawls.

Also looks less camp

where do you get the best wellies with good treads?

In my limited experience (of 1 £5 pair from one of those bargain basement shoe shops, and Dunlop Suretred ever since)...

I've found that industrial wellies have the benefit of being that bit stiffer due to the steel plate in the sole- it helps give a bit of insulation from uneven surfaces and sharp rocks, and helps for 'edging' on the climbs. Plus, since the sole is nitrile apparently this gives improved grip on wet limestone (although this could be due to the stiffness also).

I also find that having a toecap makes for better comfort and traction in crawls. This I noticed a while ago during a Bagshawe digging session- having taken spare boots and oversuits in to keep the mud at the dig and off the pretties on the way out, so I took my cheapo wellies minus toecaps- the difference was amazing, bruised toes all round, and they bend like buggery, slipping rather than pushing oneself along.

Oh, one more thing. I found that the 'Dickies' boots sold in Machine Mart are the same boots with a different label- and a few quid cheaper than in a lot of the other shops I've seen them.
