graham - What is the point in giving ladder lengths for GG if no-one has attempted it on ladder for twenty years?

Ok, but did you really need the Guide Book to tell you how much ladder to take? ;)

no but then again i would apply the same logic to the amount of rope required..

surely anyone who knows how to cave could work it out from the pitch depth
in both cases

No, I don't think so. For a simple ladder pitch, yes. For 'throw a thick rope down the water and clip in your fig of 8' approach, yes. For modern 'free of the rock and water' SRT rigging, with traverses and rebelays, no. Mind you, it would concentrate the mind on tying a knot in the end of the rope, wouldn't it !!

The GG pics look great !

Working out rope length is not really that hard when you put your mind to it, ok you would probably end up with either not enough rope, in which case you learn from your mistakes or more rope than you need on a number of pitches, but is that so bad..?

I've ended up with excess gear and lack of gear on a few trips where I had no dot to dot guide, to be honest it adds an element of interest to the trip, gives the brain something to think about and you have to find where to rig from rather than knowing whats there to start with! 8)

Scary, is the word I would use.
I'll have to agree with Mike on this one, they look cool.

Quite simple - dont buy the guide if you want the thrill of the unknown, if you want to ensure getting to the bottom, buy a GUIDE book that guides. This wont guarentee it (weather etc) but will give you more of an edge.
So why do we cave? To visit the bottom, to explore, to pretend we are first in or what?

GG is old news now the new challenge is Titan on ladders.
The main problem we are up against is the belay.
1) you need radios to comunicate (hands free for the climber)
2) due to the belay rope length, if you fall off anywhere within about 20m of the floor and you will still hit the deck

Hi Beardy, I was wondering how your ladder trip went, sorry I missed it. Any ideas for your 'birthday treat' this year?

Hi Simon -
Pity you couldn't make it this year it was a right laugh !

Not sure on 2006's birthday treat yet.

Plenty of mad capped challenges beckon.......

Possibly an extended easegill traverse vsiting all of the entrances in one trip eg in Bye George out Peterson in Peterson out Pip in Pip etc...

or maybe another big ladder trip - Vulcan, Boxhead or Long Kin East

or maybe a 1.3km deep through trip in the pyrenees...

or something mad like visiting al the caves in Ribblehead non stop till they've all been done...

or maybe a triple easegill traverse...

or a misery easegill traverse visiting all the horrors on route...

will give you a shout as plans firm up

do you fancy any of the above

Beardy
