around 20m of orange rope had to be left behind on spilt pitch 2nd one.

I stupidly left stopper knot on the pull through and had to cut.

I know I know silly me!

if any one is doing that trip would you be able to retrieve and leave at the YSS hut if possible.

Thanks

not meaningful littering at all. a honest oversight.

an one off I can guarantee, mistake like that could have been worse for sure.
lucky was enough rope to exit.

If you tie the ends of the rope together (big overhand/fig 8 or whatever), you can't abseil off the ends but you also can't end up in the situation described :)

the rope in question is less than a year old, I don't mind who gets it keeps it or donates maybe to a digging project or replacing rope aids within in a cave.
very generous of you! I know some people heading over to Ireland in April. If whoever retrieves this rope gets in touch with me, I might be able to caver post it back over the sea :)

... but with the disadvantage that both abseil and pull-down side of the rope are dangling down the pitch.

when faced with a choice of two ropes, human error does cause some people to select the wrong one, which could be catashtrophic and irretrievable.

having just the correct rope dangling down the pitch is safer i think. better to get a rope stuck occasionally.

Indeed. My approach is to leave the pull-down side in the bag and only throw it down just before the last person descends. The key is to get the penultimate person to check it feeds nicely before the last descends.

Out of interest why the penultimate and not the final person?

yea that what I was doing really,an there was alot of water going down the pitch an really wasn't 100% it was on the bottom so done the stopper, the mistake was I'd usely take the stopper out when down , but just back away from the water and forgot.

Went down on Sunday afternoon and pulled up the left behind rope but through a miscommunication it unfortunately didn't get packed into our bag (apologies). It should be tucked to the side on the big ledge half way down split pitch by the in situ traverse line if anyone wants to grab it.
