I think when it comes to Food n Drink the whole worlds gone mad!!!

A while ago people used to eat to nourish their bodies. Things that werent eaten one day got recycled the next ( roast beef on sunday, cottage pie on monday) People used to buy food that was good n wholesome, and in season, it got cooked, eaten and that was the end of it.
It was bought fresh and used up within a reasonable time scale if it smelt ok it probably was ok Best before dates and Use by dates didnt exist, you used your judgment and your brains. Tummy bugs yeah used to happen but it would be "just one of them things". Nothing got wrapped in plastic, if an item of food got dropped on the floor, it would be picked up, brushed off and eaten.
Food was made with ingredients from the cupboard, from the basic essentials. Raw eggs would be used in all sorts of things, people used to eat a cooked breakfast frequently and smear proper butter straight onto their homemade fresh bread...

These days food doesnt have any soul... everything is vacuum packed and date stamped, you dont need to use your brain...things are available out of season at an inflated price - people, especially women are encouraged to produce marvellous meals whilst doing a fulltime job, having a hectic social life, raising kids, and eating healthily, whilst attempting to stay within societys limits for ideal weight. its not the done thing to cook just a simple dish anymore, you have to make a chicken bryani (not just a bogstandard curry) or a goats cheese tart with filo pastry rather than a bogstandard quiche theres a pressure to do better, eat less, weigh less...what happened to nutrients?

Ask any skinny woman in the supermarket what NUTRITIONAL value anything in her basket has + you will probably get a blank stare, ask her the CALORIFIC value or the fat content and she will be able to answer you just like that!!

For me....Nutrition comes first. I am one of the few people living on this earth who will admit to liking avocadoes, (most women wont touch em cos of the high fat content) they have a great array of nutrients including good fats and so on. I tried the eat-a-grapefruit diet and frankly felt crap.

I think that alot of the fun of food has been destroyed, people are afraid of it after so many food scares, people dont have time to play and experiement with new ideas, and if you, like me, admit to liking cooking youre seen as having too much time on your hands and are obviously sad. I arent, i just like the feeling cooking gives me, i like the buzz i get when something goods cooking.

Recently ive started shopping at the local shops including a very good butchers, and oh the taste difference is phenomenal. I got a joint of Ham, boiled it and then roasted it off in the oven, it was gorgeous, nothing at all like the plasticated rubbish sold by the supermarkets.

Sorry to rant.....it just winds me up when you see magazine articles aimed at women saying you should be a certain size to be loved, whilst prescribing totally unbalanced diets in order for you to get to that weight when people could instead learn about food and sensible healthy eating and nutrition etc and not feel so pressurised to be society-prescribed-perfect and feeling fat n frumpy when they dont acheive this

Did early man eat 5 portions a day before?

He very possibly did. It's not that easy to hunt animals, and I imagine a good portion of his diet was from what he could scavenge in the way of roots and berries.

Remember, unlikely though it seems, there is at least a possibility that one day you will find yourself at my age, and it's only fun being my age if you still have enough physical fitness to do all the things you want to do. So it's probably worth doing whatever is required to keep your health into your 50s and beyond (something early man wasn't very good at).

And half a can of beans counts as one of your 5 portions
