    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Had it been closed then? Or do you mean open as in having an air space?

It will probably be sumped, you can free dive it although it's not recommened.

30 minutes bailing with 4 of you should give enough air space to move slowly through on your back.

Please don't cancel your trip on my say so, It maybe open but going by recent the recent weather there is good chance it's a little full.

Your only saving grace would be if a group has gone through recently (last couple of days) and done the donkey work for you.

The overall levels in Swildon's at the moment are sporting so you could do plenty of other stuff in there.

IIRC it's fundamentally important that the mud sump isn't allowed to close (i.e. sump completely) since if it does a) the air gets bad and b) it then becomes very hard work indeed to bail it again ... leading to c) it filling so completely that it becomes a genuine problem and d) trips beyond are compromised. There are (were) signs at the Mud Sump stating that every one visiting should do their bit and bail it to some extent (even if you're not going through) since "every little helps". Therefore DO YOUR BIT if you are going there; if there's any water at all in the Mud Sump you should bail it until there's none. If everyone thought "someone else can do it" then it would never get done.

I remember a few years back when it was blocked, we used to go to Swildons 4 via trouble series and down blue pencil passage - i.e. doing that part of the round trip in reverse. Not sure how feasible this would be if the water levels were high as the siphon in the first trouble is on the blue pencil side of the duck and I don't think there is any way to bail it from the swildons 2 side. I went through it a few years back when there was about 4 inches of air in a pocket that twists around. Half way through with water lapping around my nostrils I remember thinking this wasn't such a great idea....

First time I did the round trip the mud sump was closed. The air was indeed pretty bad, although it was during a bad air period. With two of us it didn't take so long to bail though.

we wouldnt have not done a trip just gone somwhere else except that.....my dads had a return of a cold and feels like crap hence stuck sump 4 will have to wait for another day....again

as far as bailing is concerned in the context of the trip we had pland it probably wouldnt have been posible to bail it and get to our intended destination so we'd have gone somwhere else like sump 2 however diving sump 1 when the water is likly to be blody freezing with a cold doesnt rank very high up on my old mans to do list. if any one else is planing a trip to sump 4 or any where else this weekend for that mater and wouldnt mind me taging along id be glad to help bail, cary tackle sacks etc

out of intrest whats the rate of refill on the mud sump we went there on sunday and had a look and whilst there was an air space it was only a very small one and as we didnt know how far down it had been bailed and therfore how fast it refilled (i dont think ive been throgh the mudsump in perticulaly high water before and stuart cant remember so we left it alone) we did however spend five minutes doing some token bailing but with two of us that didnt make a huge amount of diference before heading of down to vicarige pot.

You only need about two or three inches, as its only about three foot long. When we done a trip to
Shatter Series there was about two or three inches of airspace. We done our trip, which took around 3 hours,
made our way back through Mud sump, there had been no change in the level.

I have done countless trips through Mud Sump, and it seems to me that it can take about two days to fill
after being bailed about four to five inches. I suppose this could change if the weather was very wet.
