Cap'n Chris started a topic on an arrow in the moonmilk in Pierre's Pot, and it made me wonder what people's thoughts are on route marking in general.
Here are some ideas to start with.
Permanent marking - definitely out of order, except perhaps in one or two exceptional cases. For example, the reflective tabs in OFD streamway which (I think) mark escape points for flood conditions.
Temporary markings - plastic pointers, for example - OK up to a point, but how many times have you come across these when clearly there is nobody else underground other than your party? Are these from people who left them behind for another day, couldn't be bothered to pick up their mess, or perhaps were doing a round trip and weren't bothered about leaving litter behind as the round trip was more important than clearing up afterwards? Are cairns of rocks any better?
And even when I find temporary markers, or cairns, it still niggles me a bit.
Perhaps, having spent decades learning my way round places without using markers, I wonder why other people can't do the same. On the very very rare occasion I have used markers, I have ALWAYS picked them up again the same day.
And what about the concept of never exploring underground to a point beyond your limits? Should this apply to more than just your physical capabilities? Do you learn the layout of a cave better by committing routes to memory, by not using route markers, and never going beyond the point where you can remember your way back again?
