Scoska

Had a very short trip there in 2005, followed passage to the stream at the end. Didn't do any side-passages - if there are some - I don't have NC1 to jog my memory..

Evidence for potential?

?A mile west, and midway between Litton and Arncliffe, and on the southern side of the Skirfare, is Gildersber Cave.  There are various reports about the length of this cave, in fact, story says no person ever yet reached the end of it.  A man once entered at eight o?clock in the morning and crept on for three miles, and then grew fainthearted and returned, arriving at the entrance by twelve o?clock, noon.  Other adventurers, on discovery bent, have crawled so far as to hear the farmer at Darnbrook Farm, by Fountains Fell, calling home his cows at milking time.?

Ref. Edmund Bogg; Higher Wharfedale (1904).  Facsimile reprint, 1989, Old Hall Press.

Let me anticipate some of the possible comments.

1. It?s just hearsay from a romantic writer.
2. Scoska is Gildersbank Cave (NC vol 1).
3. To crawl 6 miles in 4 hours is pretty good going.
4. The last bit sounds more like Robinsons Pot.

I know but there are other reasons to believe that Scoska and / or Bown Scar may have potential to be extended. :-\

There probably is potential in connecting Scoska to Bown Scar and perhaps pushing Scoska up towards the sinks (if there are any) or some of the holes higher up - a very quick glance at the map shows something in the region of 100m between shakeholes and Scoska (yet again I don't have NC1 to hand to check properly!).

I looked earlier at NC1 and it does say that the boulder choke at the end of Scoska draughts - has anyone ever had a proper poke about there?
