I imagine at least some subscribers to this list will be familiar with the late Jeremy Wilkinson’s Gazetteer and Bibliography of the Mines and Quarries of North Wales which I made available on line (and have added information to over the years).
I’ve now added all the mapped extractive sites (which includes shafts, levels, quarries, pits etc.) in mid- and south Wales to the gazetteer using information from the GB1900 project (was University of Portsmouth, now curated by National Library of Scotland) which was based on the OS 6” 2nd edition maps which were surveyed and revised during the 1890–1920 period,
I’ve made a start on adding bibliographic information to the gazetteeer. Currently I’m working on the Cardiganshire mines and adding bibliographic references (primarily David Bick’s The Old Metal Mines of Mid-Wales and George Hall’s Metal Mines of Southern Wales). I’m also correcting grid reference errors when I notice them. Obviously it’s going to take considerable time to complete these aspects of the project.
The gazetteer continues to be available at https://www.hendrecoed.org.uk/Wilkinson For those unfamiliar with it the gazetteer allows for searches based on name, product, county and/or all sites within a given radius of a given location (note that the GB1900 grid references generally relate to the first character of the legend rather than the actual feature shown on the map).
I would welcome corrections, additions and comments.
