NUg Associate Publishes Underground Air Raid Shelter Research in Prestigious British Journal

NUg translator's note: Our good friend and associate, Gianluca Padovan, is a principal speleological explorer, researcher and historian whose work is published in numerous respected scientific papers. Here is a translation of a recently published Congress held in Massa, Italy in 2007 whose work has just been published in the prestigious BAR International British Archaeological Review Journal. Below are selected papers from the Third Official proceedings of the Italian National Congress on Archaeology of the Underground convened in Massa, Italy 5-7 October, 2007. Fulvio Salvi represented Naples and with his presentation which included a slide presentation of the astounding WWII air raid shelters running beneath Naples which were converted by the ruling Mussolini Fascist government from hundreds from gigantic cavities left from underground quarried tufa sandstone. The study and registration of artificial cavities means the documentation of underground structures. Just as man began creating buildings on the surface of the earth, over the course of time, he also dug beneath the surface thus creating new subterranean spaces and structures which remain essentially intact, and which can be studied, restored and even utilized. In fact there exists an underground heritage, consisting of structures both excavated and structures once at surface level which became buried and part of the underground over the passing of time. The interpretation and understanding of such structures is a source of interesting information about our past, and its comparison with the present. This series was created under the aegis of the Federazione Nazionale Cavità Artificiali (F.N.C.A.) . . . The National Federation of Artificial Cavities.
The aim is to create a base for the disclosure of relevant, scientific research studies, whether monographs, the works of various authors or documentation from conferences and conventions and a series of easily utilized tools that can be consulted for the development of artificial cavity research.
