Given the rise of Cthulhu in the last competition here's a link to a short story by H P Lovecraft in the early 1900s, the creator (or perhaps reporter) of Call of Cthulhu about a trip into Mammoth Cave.

Mind, I do have a good light.
Does it meet the following illumination 'requirement':

"We shall see that at which dogs howl in the dark, and that at which cats prick up their ears after midnight."

Maybe there's a reason H E Balch used a candle for illumination....  ;D
