What is a Witch?

I've been looking at witchmarks (apotropaics) for a while now (and found some), and how they may associate with real life witch events.  There are a few possible causal events relating to marks in caves.  One thing I think is missing is how do people now perceive witches?  There's the standard Wizard of Oz 1930s green one, but what about reality?  Perceptions, legends, thoughts, experiences, modern or old practical applications all gratefully received.
I'm not a practicing witch, just an investigator, but I have been accused in the past of following the dark arts or delving where I should not, so I know where people may be coming from, therefore anonymity guaranteed. And I am pro Witch if that helps at all.
Thank you for your consideration.
