The International congress in Sheffield was in 1978. It was following this that SRT in the UK became much more widely used, certainly up north anyway.

The NCC (Up North) were using Gibbs Rope Walkers (directly imported from the States) as early as 1971. :coffee:

And Gibbs were a direct copy of the Henshaw & Morehouse (US) 1965 "Climbing Cam" which was claimed to be an original invention upon its release but seems itself to be a sly copy of Henri Brenot's 1934 "Monkey", facts which are disagreeable to those who believe that Gibbs invented ascenders and that SRT is an entirely American invention.

I chose Settle over Clapham on the basis that there would be more taxis in Settle and that there were a few more train services passing through Settle before the line divides up.

My times were taken from the railway timetable station to station for a mid week day in August 2015.  Double checking Manchester to Settle is 2 1/2 hours (not sure how I did that  ).  Leeds Bradford relies on a bus link to Leeds.

It has just come to me that the event runs from Sunday night to Saturday morning so the transport plans get more challenging.  I hesitate to suggest a shuttle bus as that might get me an invite to organise things  :-[  .

Yes, that's why I was suggesting that it made more sense to take a taxi to Shipley, rather than take a slow bus in the opposite direction in order to add 15 mins to your rail journey.

There is even a bus from Leeds Bradford to Shipley. It's only hourly but takes about the same time as the one to Leeds.

Apperley bridge station is due to be completed in the next couple of months:
http://www.wymetro.com/news/projects/projectdetails/apperleybridge/
Construction began in October 2014 and has been progressing well, with a target completion date in late  August 2015.

It's only 4 miles down the A658 from Leeds Bradford Airport.

Clapham (North Yorkshire) station is only 2.5 miles from Dalesbridge.

Note that trains heading NW from Skipton fork in two directions just SW of Settle, there are two stations within a mile or so of each other: Settle and Giggleswick. The Giggleswick ones head through Clapham and on to Lancaster, the Settle ones head up to Ribblehead and on to Carlisle.

Settle to Dalesbridge is less than 5 miles.

There are two ways by train from M'cr to Leeds: the route through Huddersfield is *much* faster than the more northern line through Rochdale.

That was quick! I assumed it'd be years away.

It seems it's on the Leeds to Bradford line, which goes through Shipley, but you'd have to change at Shipley for Settle or Clapham. I suspect bus directly to Shipley might still be quicker than bus to Apperley Bridge, train to Shipley.

Another alternative would be Guiseley which is only 3 miles from the airport, and has already been built - again, you'd need to change at Shipley.

Lots of trains run direct from Leeds through Shipley / Skipton / (Clapham or Settle) with no changes.

They do indeed, but not necessarily the ones that will stop at Apperley Bridge. The Apperley Bridge station is being advertised as being on the Leeds Bradford line, which suggests the trains stopping at Apperley bridge will be the ones that turn left at Shipley and go to Bradford, and not the ones that turn right for Skipton/Clapham/Settle.

For anyone arriving at Leeds-Bradford and aiming for Dalesbridge by train there are three main choices:

1) bus into centre of Leeds, longer journey, but train will be straight through

2) bus to Shipley, direct train, (picking up the same train as you would have got from Leeds).

3) bus to Guiseley 3mi or Apperley Bridge 5mi, change trains at Shipley

Even Durham (Tees Valley) airport is only 66 miles away - slower roads though as driving time given as 1 hr 52 min, whilst Manchester 1.30 & Leeds Bradford an hour & 4.

Ahem ... that's actually faster roads, compared to Leeds Bradford ...  :tease:

Durham - 66mi in 1hr 52m = average speed of 35mph
LBA - 39 miles in 1hr 15m = average speed of 31mph

Public transport in the Dales is a bit of a joke.

Anyone coming in from abroad especially if they want to cave while here as well as attend a conference I'd strongly suggest would be far better off hiring a car for the duration - it may only be 2.5 miles from Clapham Station for example but it's a long walk to say, Ease Gill from Dalesbridge.

Sound advice.

Public transport is OK from city centre to city centre, or from edge of city to city centre. Anything else is infrequent, slow or non-existent.

And I'm fairly sure Dales taxis are very expensive.

?25 from Dent to Horton (about 6 miles) someone told me the other day. Because the taxi had to come out from Bentham. (Taxis in towns charge just for your journey, but those in rural areas tend to charge both ways because they won't be able to pick up another fare on the way back).

Been asked by an overseas caver what the nearest airport is. Guessing it's Manchester. Anyone know any different?

I've heard Leeds/Bradford being quoted as a possible but don't know if it has any flights from the continent or if it's just UK-based flights.
