New CNCC website (with cave descriptions and topos)

Agreed. However, surveys come with copyright issues and often there are politics associated to having such things made public. The CNCC descriptions were written bespoke for the CNCC; the maps are open source, and for the topos we have obtained permission from the copyright holder to use. Furthermore, there is already a website that has done a lot of work to make surveys electronically available (cavemaps.org.uk). Saying that, if we were approached by a club who wished to see their survey made available on the CNCC website then we'd certainly be happy to discuss creating this feature.

Further cave descriptions have been posted on the CNCC website over the Christmas/new year period:

Out Sleets Beck Pot (a superb and often overlooked cave; one of my favourite trips of the last few years)
Aygill Caverns
Big Meanie
Large Pot (traditional Colossus route)
Long Kin West
Pillar Holes
Ibbeth Peril 1

More will be added in due course.

Please remember that there is a function on the website to submit a description for any caves not yet covered (and to report errors in existing ones). Have you got a favourite cave that you know really well and would like to share a navigational description of? If so, please consider submitting it using a similar style to those already available to ensure consistency (including blurb, any relevant warnings, best parking location, best approach to the cave, navigation in the cave). We can help produce a supporting overland map to show the relevant locations.

Also, (while I have your attention):

I'd like to remind you that the CNCC Annual General Meeting is Saturday 11th March (10am Hellifield village institute). The deadline for Committee and Full Member Club applications is 14th January. As yet we have not received any interest in the new Committee position of Individual Caver Representative. See the link below for more information.

So how do you update the website, I assume I need to have a user?

According to Matt's earlier post "There is a reporting tool for any inaccuracies that you identify, and for caves where a description is absent, there is a button at the bottom of the cave information page to submit a description of your own. All submitted descriptions should be written in the style of the existing ones (some guidelines are included when you click this button) to help ensure consistency. " But I couldn't find it either! I wonder whether it has accidentally been removed during an update?

Ah - I get it. From the main "cave info" menu you select Caves List, then the name of the cave you are interested in. Then under "Rigging guides and descriptions", if there isn't already a description, there's  a link to allow you to submit one.

Makes sense - by putting the "add description" button under the individual cave, it means you can't inadvertently try to add a description for a cave which already has one.

Yes but if you spot something wrong how would you update that? For example I noticed it said Aquamole can only be done in slightly damp conditions, when I know from several trips down there in quite wet weather the cave is pretty bomb proof if a little unpleasant. I would say if you can get down Rowton you can get down Aquamole.

Correct, thanks Kay :)

If you wish to submit a description for a cave that currently doesn't have one, simply locate that cave on the website and then at the bottom of the page of information on that cave you will find the submit a description button (where a link to a description would usually be). We are looking to try to keen some consistancy in the style of these descriptions, so please include a blurb, any warnings, where to park, how to find the cave, and a navigation guide for the trip. We can produce a map to accompany the description.

If you wish to report an issue with an existing description there is a button to do so at the top of the cave descriptions list page:

Thanks!
Matt

A few items of news relating to the CNCC online cave descriptions:

https://cncc.org.uk/news/an-overlooked-little-gem

and

https://cncc.org.uk/news/ease-gill-caverns-description-updated

In summary, the Little Hull Pot description has been updated for greater clarity and to try to inspire more people to enjoy this magnificent pothole (I am often surprised by how many younger cavers that I meet who've never done this). Secondly, the Ease Gill Caverns description have been updated including the addition of a few new routes.
