Doing some DIY that's not relevant to the question, it's more to sate my inquisitiveness.

What's the difference between a paling and a railing? Looking at the stock catalogue not sure why they're named differently, though my best guess is their function.

I always thought that railings were horizontal whilst palings were vertical. As in you can grab hold of a hand-rail, or impale yourself should you slip.
