    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

Unbearable Grylls

Was there even competition between the two for the role?

Was Ray Mears a scout?

Was Peter Duncan a Christian? There's nothing to suggest as much in his wiki biog though he was in Flash Gordon so that may make him some sort of divinity...

But yes, Grylls is a tit. And so is Cox. But Mears is dubious too. He has the look of a man who lives on king-size breakfast trays, not reindeer moss...

There was a comedy sketch show a few years ago...Katie Brand I think.
In one sketch she referred  to Ray Mears as ' A fat rambler who just got lucky'...still makes me chuckle...But then I'm easily amused  ;)

I was amused by the "Drift wood off the sea shore".  It looked like dry kindling from the corner shop.  Lighting a fire with a flint? I am sure he was lighting, a firelighter or the stuff you use in a solid fuel stove. [Meta fuel?]

I had to keep reminding myself that all the time there was a camera man and a sound recordist.  Either following them or allowed to get in front of them.

Good entertainment.

Thanks for the info on Spar Cave. I will pay it a visit next May when I'm on Skye.
Re Grylls. I think if you followed his survival advice you would die. If you followed Ray Mears advice you would be ok.
I like Brian Cox despite his sometimes irritating style (and his big red lips). His programme about alien life was very good. It seems we are alone.

Mr Grylls has a persona that leaves much to be desired but lets not forget he's just doing it for the money.  Has anyone met him in real life??

Now for really annoying you can't beat Jamie Oliver.

Briefly, though only in passing while he was being tripped up in a busy crowd by someone I was with. Can't comment on a difference between private, personal qualities and professional presentation, but can confirm that he's easy to miss in a crowd as he throws himself over your foot in a way that would never happen with Mears!

The big difference between those who chose to spend their time on internet forums .... just spewing out negativity in an attempt to ridicule those who might make a life for them selves and at the same time helping others.

Is Passion and drive

Bear Grylls is a man with passion and drive ........ that he has for several years and continues to inspire millions, by his TV shows, books, DVDs and interactions with millions of young people to better themselves in life.....

Wherever I go in the world or talk with visitors to our country many times Bear comes up in conversation, he is a great ambassador, loved and admired by millions.

What have you done with your life that you feel you have on balance a right to criticise such a great human being doing his bit for humanity ?!

Its Christmas time and New year....time for life changing resolutions...we can get out there and make a difference that will change the world in some way...small or large to be a better place.... Stop being negative...be inspired....

Oh please. He was the offspring of an obviously wealthy family, had a privileged upbringing, hasn't he done well then.
Are you really saying anyone could have the life he has?

And on the subject of making a difference, I can think of many a person that has done "their bit and more besides" for humanity, without the need for books, TV shows and DVDs for personal gain. People who really make a difference are not the small minority of celebrities that jump on the bandwagon, it's the real people that make the real difference.

Without a TV there are no "celebrities", just real people doing real stuff, making a real difference. This forum does not stop anyone from being active, productive, useful, informative etc.. Don't confuse the issue, or yourselves.

well said chris. whether we like Bear grylls, ray mears, brian cox or Jamie oliver, we all have a choice, turn it off. obviously millions of others like them as they choose to watch. If it was a totally correct programme would it make good telly for the millions? cant remember the programme with kate humble, but the editing made sump 1 in swildons about 5 metres long, much more dramatic than the 30cm. 30cm not good telly, just be smug in the fact you all know the truth.

and finally if programmes like this are not made and films not made where would chris get his material for some of his films ;)

Precisely,  I don't watch drivel nor do I read newspaper stories or buy crappy magazines about the stars and celebs. Millions of people do, if they wish to be fed mind numbing stuff then more fool them. I'll stick to getting out and about when I can.

Yawn.

Does anyone know who won Strictly Come Dancing, then? - wasn't that bloke that went up Titan with Kate Humble in it (not Moose)?  ;)

I'm surprised this was moved to idle chat, the kind of shit being posted in this thread is par the course on this forum.

Kate Humble and Steve Backshall were the presenters on Ultimate Caving. along with Tim & Pam Fogg. And yes, Moose  also helped them get up Titan. (Via Speedwell.) I've just watched it again off a DVD recording I made back then. Kate's got more courage than me these days TBH.

Excellent program if a little over dramatised in places, but that's TV for ya.
