Pwll Dwfn

Please be aware that Pwll Dwfn is currently subject to an active attempt at digging the sump by the welsh section CDG. The cave is rigged with some rather dubious old 8 & 9mm tat in expedition style. There's also 1.5" dia air hose running down the cave using the newly created bypass.

Please avoid using the ropes or delay any trip there for the next few weeks until we've finished and removed all our equipment.

Many thanks
Gareth Davies

Hello, how do you pronounce that cave?

Pwll Dwfn has been that cave that I try to avoid pronouncing to anyone Welsh.  I like OFD for its abbreviation.

I pronounce it Pwll Dwfn.

I believe the cave was originally named after Paul Dolphin and was thought to sound a bit like his name, however the original namers (who wern't Welsh) got it wrong. I believe the pronunciation is somkething like " Pooth Duffryn" although as I'm not Welsh I may also have it wrong.  :-\

Someone Welsh could do with answering this! I always say it something like (not that I say it often, hardly ever in fact) Puth Duvin.. Only based on a rather loose understanding of how to pronounce certain letters in Welsh rather than having heard others say it.

I believe Les is correct on the story, not quite right on the pronunciation though - there's no "r" in there anywhere!

*a Welsh "w" is a vowel which sounds like the "oo" in "book" (in a "standard", non-Lancashire way)
*a Welsh "ll" is impossible to describe accurately, but I'm sure you've all heard it. It's not a sound that exists in English, but a common anglicised version is "lth" or "thl" or "th" or even "cl".
*a Welsh single "f" is like the "v" in "van" or the "f" in "of", if you like

If you don't like putting two consonsants together like the "f" and "n" at the end of "dwfn", you can make it easier by repeating the preceding vowel and saying something like "dwfwn".

"Poolth Doovoon" - that looks awful though!

It means something like deep pit or deep pool.

Who cares about how you say the name. What's far more interesting is, Gareth, who are those girls in your profile picture? Please let them all be your sisters.

I wondered who would reply with that!  :clap2:

The Welsh language is wonderous, I like S4C, I watch alot of the Magners league on it with Welsh commentary and subtitles thinking that maybe I'll be able to pick some up.

Looking at the picture, and knowing Gareth, I can tell you that it is extremely unlikely he's in any way related...

Unfortunately (for her) she looks like me with tits and red hair (minus facial hair)

Back to the original topic!

Is the work still ongoing?  We had vaguely planned to have a trip down there this weekend, but if you are still working down there and would rather we stayed away please let me know.

Hi Cavegirl,

Yes we are there this weekend, but there's no need to postpone your trip. I'm going down Saturday by myself and it would be great to have some other folk there. Admittedly, I do have a large bag to take in and it would be great if I could distribute some of the smaller, more fragile items to somebody else. It's only for the inward trip, as everything will be reused on sunday. Let me know if you and your group might be up for that.

Cheers, Mike

Hi Mike,

thanks for the reply.  I won't actually be in Wales this weekend, I have just organised the trip for my club (Shepton Mallet CC).  I have forwarded your message to the people that are going, and hopefully if they are interested in helping you they will manage to get in touch with you before saturday.

have a good trip

Thanks Cavegirl,

Sadly, I'm not going myself now. But there will be lots of activity the following weekend. Can any visitors please watch out for the hose in the entrance. Plus, if a nice metallic glint catches anyones eye, there's a lost wedding ring down there. Maybe by the hose, maybe near the sump pool. I'm sure the owner would be most glad for it's return.

Cheers, Mike

Digging is turning into a long term project. Please be careful when you visit the cave as we're leaving our ropes and airlift hoses in-situ. We are currently there every other weekend, and will be continuing  for the next few months.

Gareth

We've pulled out all our ropes etc from the main trade route of Pwll Dwfn and tidied up the little gear left for next winter at the bottom of pitch 5. The airlift hose and ropes are still in the bypass, and I suggest this route is avoided. Unfortunately you still have to cross the hose at the top of pitch 5, but this is of little inconvenience.

We plan on returning next winter to continue where we've left off digging in the sump pool.

Well done on the new finds! :clap2:  I'll ask the inevitable - is there likely to be an exchange trip soon?

The video is really good too. A possibility for the next Banff Festival perhaps Gareth?

Amazing where you get to looking at you tube. Started off in Pwll Dwfn, then Dan Yr Ogof, Craig-a-Ffynnon and ended up on a trip to Game Over in Krubera!

The videos on the new stuff in Dan Yr Ogof are really interesting. Mind you, after watching that, I hope the Chamber Pot Series isn't the way into the Giedd Series!
