Retro seems to be creeping back.... carbide...

You can still buy cassettes: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Guardians-Galaxy-Awesome-Vol-CASSETTE/dp/B00Q5F3AN8/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1517530210&sr=8-1&keywords=awesome+mix+vol+1+cassette  Yes I ordered one, so will fire up the old Technics tape deck when it arrives.  I wonder what's also in the loft to dig out?
Maglite are still making and selling incandescent zombie thumpers http://maglite.com/shop/flashlights/full-size-flashlights/maglite-6-cell-d-flashlight.html#.WnOqsRRkiCQ (mines a red one but I added a 750 lumens Terralux LED that melts tungsten and eyeballs (yes I know there's now a 1000lumen one...and there's a bloke in the States that makes 5000 lumens ones)).  Also have a ML25IT 2C cell incandescent which is actually quite nice.
Vinyl is still king.
So what remains is the carbide question:  Is it possible to have a LED light to properly simulate a carbide light? Or (perhaps less possible unless Volkswagen make it) a less polluting carbide light?

I have a Zebralight that is close. Warm color and super wide even beam. I have used it to reproduce some photos taken by carbide light 45 years ago. I also still use carbide now and then.

I've got the "warm white" scurion, and esp at lower power settings it comes quite close to the carbide glow in flood mode.

You might get a LED to simulate the light from a carbide lamp, but you will never simulate the smell.

Oh dear I remember carbide lamps well. Carbide was bought in long red tins. I cant remember where. Maybe cycle shops. It was said that a bit of carbide in a Codd bottle with water would blow it up with the marble in place. I rather doubt that. Then that tale about seagulls --- better not go there.

They really would run on piss ? and why not? I've only once pissed into a 'stinky' ? a malodorous experience ? but sure, it does work.

I was at a fancy dress ball once* and when the carbide lamp ran out of water I topped it up with Draught Bass which worked fine.

* As part of a three man caving team. For better effect we joined ourselves by a hundred foot rope = chaos on the dancefloor.
