    Charlestown Cave?

There's an adit immediately below the bridge at Gunnislake on the Cornish side which is an easy trip, about 1/4 mile long with a couple of tiny stopes and interesting mineralisation.  There's also short but interesting stuff on Kit Hill but they take a bit of finding.  If you get hold of...

    Charlestown Cave?

I agree with disgusted, there are many old mines in the area and the "cave" (I've visited it) appears to be on a crosscourse so it#s probably in effect a crosscut to intersect lodes.  To give some idea of how poorly recorded the mines are, several years ago I was pottering around in the woods on...

Looking for interesting caves in my area..

You're not in a limestone area but there are lots of interesting holes in Hardcastle Crags (Hebden Mill Cave, Tom Bells and numerous other rifts and bouldery holes, but be careful: even small caves such as these can have dangers, such as hidden drops and moving rocks.  Another alternative is to...

    Caves in Coldstone Quarry (Greenhows)

Many years ago I did Pendleton Pipe, a partially natural mineworking in an opencut very close to Coldstones Quarry with two entrances where the opencut intersected the system.  Total length was about 300ft of muddy chambers and bouldery sections.  It was quarried away, I think, about 30 years ago.

    Calcite formations on concrete

I've still got the photo but I took it about 25 years ago so it's not digital.  I'll see what I can do but it might take a bit of time.

    Calcite formations on concrete

I was helping to build a new club house on a holiday park.  It involved breaking into a void below the pre-existing building which had a thick concrete cap on it.  I managed to get a photo of the dozen or so 5ft columns and hundreds of long straws which were exposed before the whole lot was...

    Caving and mental health

Thanks for the posts so far.  Compared to the organisation I work for, which has about 200,000 employees, it's apparent that cavers are generally are open-minded about the issue of what people are apparently capable of with mental (and physical) disabilities.  I find it ironic that I can hold...

    Caving and mental health

I'm doing research for work about mental health.  If someone asked you to take them caving and then said they suffered from a mental health problem, say depression and/or anxiety, what would your initial reaction be?  Would you be happy to take them anyway or would you have second thoughts and...

    Devon & Cornwall Underground Council

Agreed.    I started off caving in Yorkshire, moved to South Wales with caving and mine exploration, now I'm in Cornwall.  Underground is underground isn't it?  Does it really matter what you do?

    Devon & Cornwall Underground Council

I know I'm backtracking a bit here.  I used to be involved with DCUC but found that the commute and deteriorating health became prohibitive (I'm concentrating on working with the Geoconservation Group instead).  There is a different mindset in Cornwall, mainly due to DCUC being perceived as more...

A30 closed near redruth due to mine opening up in the road

It looks like it's Hallenbeage Mine.  You can see the two engine houses on the south side of the A30.
