Car hire at Bilbao Airport?

I guess some people on here may have hired a car in Bilbao in the last 12 months. Any recommendations? What to avoid?

Happy to pay a fair price and not get stung for damages rather than going for the cheapest option.

Do Car Hire excess pay out with no fuss and hassle?
I've never claimed, it's just a company that I use. It's difficult to know until needed with any company like this. Looking at reviews, some people say service was good for claims, others not happy.

Last time i was at Bilbao (three years ago?) I was stunned by how much the cost of car hire had increased since our previous visit the year before. I've always used Doyouspain.com for car hire there, which seemed to give plenty of options (but doubtless other comparison sites are available). Thankfully I've never had to make any claim in relation to hire car insurance, so can't comment on that

I hire cars in Europe several times a year, I also use a top up insurance from the UK, it makes the car hire much cheaper. The hire charges have gone up considerably post Covid. A more cynical person would suggest that it is to make up for the loss of income from selling short term insurance or perhaps to cover the loss of income during Covid.
Whilst I use Icarhire top up insurance, I have not yet had to make a claim, so can't comment on that.

During Covid, tourism and car manufacturing decreased and second hand car prices soared (57% between 2019 and 2021[1]). Car rental companies, especially in tourist areas, did the obvious and sold all their spare vehicles. It will take a while (at least) for things to return to their previous state, especially considering the move to electric cars.

Goldcar are very good. 3 minute minibus transfer to their garage/office. Took a car back last year after somebody crashed into it while I was in town, damaging the wing and bumper. I had taken out their €100 extra “Super Relax” policy. When I dropped it off they didn’t leave the office to see the damage.

I realised it was almost as expensive to fly and car-hire there if you are going for two weeks in the summer especially, as the ferry is, so I just put my car on the ferry, but a lot less hassle then! (As I am insured to drive in the EU). Downside is you loose about a day and a half travelling each way.
