    Hut shaft

The bottom of Hut Shaft has been blocked since around 1960 after several shaft caps and countless stones were thrown down the shaft. I tried digging through the blockage in the early 1980's but it was hard going and with A FURTHER 10-20 m of blockage to go I started working in other places. W...

    First Aid Kits

I have successfully used saliva to help remove grit from my eye after one incident when I had no water left. You can get quite inventive when needed. In general, then the smaller and lighter your comfort/emergency kit is then the more likely you are to carry it on a trip, rather than leaving it...

    First Aid Kits

It's not all about first aid for me but also an element of comfort and self-rescue. On most trips I will take something to eat and drink, a knife and whisel and spare chord/bootlace as well as a sky hook and etrier to help me on climbs since I was injured. . My SRT kit contains a few spare bits...

    Your Preferred Climbing Ascender...

I've used several versions of basic and handled jammers over the years. A basic is good for most things but I prefer a handled jammer for hauling up a load of rope etc. I find it better to hold both like a basic during normal climbing though.

    Lovers walk

Ladygate Mine is a little down river from the walled-up feature. That was open in the 1940's and 50's (no I'm not that old but my Mother went in there) but was later sealed up by the local council. It opened up again a few years ago before being resealed. We had a look around it when it was more...

    Garlands Pot anchors

I don't remember it being so deep. Does the 20m on the sketch include the rigging? The last time I looked down from the top it did look deeper than I remembered though. I think some of the rubble pile has washed away over the last 30 odd years. I think we used 2x25 ft ladders to the natural...

    Survival bags

No, I'm not so short. 6ft 6 inches and they work for me.

Our village is a few miles south of Eldon Hole and we were cut off by deep snow drifts last winter.

    Roystone Grange.

Hi Phil There was quite a lot of local activity mining for calcite in the 20th century (surface and underground) - Long Rake, Arbour Low, Moss Rake, Cromford Moor Mine, Chelmorton (can't remember the name of the mine) and others. It was used as a decorative dressing, in terrazzo floors and even...

    TG6 Lens Cover

The glass lens protector on my TG6 is starting to get quite scratched. Its not having a big effect on image quality yet, but I regularly use in in abrasive conditions so I'm expecting it to progressively get worse. Is it possible to replace this glass? Thanks Julie

    Jugholes Adit Gate

Is the old turntable cover I used for the old oil drums still there? I found it under the bushes in the next field when Doug Nash and I fitted the oil drums in the early 1980's. It was probably from the original adit entrance a bit further down the hill.

    Masson Cavern Roof Cracks

Sounds familiar. I don't think I ever noticed this on the way in but it's quite visible when you turn around or head out.

    Masson Cavern Roof Cracks

There have been lots of big cracks in the roof between the quarry entrance and Chrichman since I first went in there in the 1980's. It would be interesting to see if anything has changed but I'm working away this week.
