talking at the weekend somone suggested that caving was 100 times more deadly/dangerous  than golf....
I  just wondered if this was a true face or one of those urban legends that you occasional hear of?

I think you are less likely to be struck by lighting when caving but I wouldn't rule it out entirely  :-\

Wouldn't you be more likely to die of exhaustion playing golf?
After all, I don't know of any caver that has done 19 holes in a day!  ;)....................................................................I'll get me coat.

Had heard the opposite... Golfers being a bunch of OAP heart attack fodder playing with lightning conductors in the rain. Incidentally, had been told horse riding, football, rugby and many other sports/hobbies/pastimes were more dangerous. Quantifying this however is a different cluster of feck  kettle of fish

PS. Jrat got struck by lightning at the bottom of a cave in the Dachstein (and also Blitz (hence his nickname) at the entrance) whilst talking on a field telephone that was wired to the entrance.

true but does that take into account the larger numbers of people playing gold compared to the smaller number of cavers...

Probably not, but you don't want to let the truth ruin a good story.

Statistics can say pretty much what you want them to say, but the population of cavers is too small to provide reliable statistical analysis when very infrequent events are considered. One or two incidents in a population of 5,000 will not stand out above a general background of a few events across the whole population of the country.

I think I have said this before somewhere, but at Templeton - the lightning conductor to beat all lightning conductors - we all run to the pub if it looks like a thunderstorm is approaching.

I am testing my new lap top that I have been bought to do farm work with - ssshhhh!!!
