You might want to look at the article on p6 of Descent 200.
In summary:
In tests, type of knot affected whether or not a shock load likely to cause injury was transmitted to the caver on a Factor 1 fall. 3 knots were OK, best being half-double fisherman's. Figure of 8 fared less well and was more likely to break.
