A question aimed at PDMHS folk.

If it had a lid with additional metal work and a bolt, like that at Jugholes shaft, it would help facilitate ou.r top rigging, entrance and exit. It would stop melingerers from lobbing large rocks down the shaft too. I'd have to say that a grill would be better than a solid plate.

Just my opinion.

Someone from the elusive WMRG here - we are actually getting our act together and putting together a website as we speak - honest! We did indeed winch Snake last year and it is in fact one of the crookedest shafts I've ever been down, with some very interesting overhangs. You must have been able to hear a kibble being hauled up it in the next county! In my opinion (I'm not an expert) it is likely to take some rigging, and you are in full view of the owner's house, so you'll definitely be clocked if you don't have permission (probably in more ways than one!). Best thing to do is ask, as in my view you'll probably be given permission, though best to group together to minimise disturbance. The climber (in the coe) is, as pointed out by someone else, not really suitable for SRT or freeclimbing.  Snake is of course home to the semi-legendary ore tub with inclined wheels (see ME pics) :)

Cheers, Ash

Interesting post Ash, look forward to seeing the WMRG website.
Sounds an interesting project to get this shaft rigged for SRT; any idea just how many rebelays and deviations it would require ?

Sorry, no idea. I was too busy trying not to fall out of the winch cradle, which happened to at least one person! Ash
