a swan found in Goyden Pot

We found a dead swan on one of the ledges overlooking the main streamway yesterday, February 1st 2022. It was just before the 2 metre roped climb up near Mud Hall. It didn't look as though it had been washed in considering its position and its condition. The assumption therefore is that it either swam in and flew up to the ledge or flew all the way in. It looks as though it had only been there a short while as it is complete and has not started to decay. I imagine it will get very smelly and not be a pretty sight for any groups of kids coming by. If anyone is visiting that area soon I suggest they may be prepared to dispose of it in some way. Unfortunately, we didn't have the means to do so ourselves at that time. There may have been a ring on its leg but I didn't look that closely.

Due to the current bird-flu situation you should ...

"If you find dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds, such as gulls or birds of prey, you should report them to the Defra helpline (03459 335577)."

Also, avoid touching the dead swan.

You can identify the owner from the number of nicks cut into the beak,

1 = Dyers Company
2 = Vintners Company

Most swans have no nicks, these belong to the Queen.

Does that explain the pub name "The swan with two necks"  (which is usually taken as a corruption of "nicks")?

Yes, indeed that is the explanation.
