Access to Tynings Barrow Swallet

From CSCC Website:

The cave is gated and the key is held by Mr Dave Reakes, Tyning's Farm. Park tidily along the verge before the farm and use the stile provided for access to the field. Small goodwill fee.

Last changed 01/01/2005.

Basically, unless anyone knows any different, ask at the farm, give them a small fee and they'll give you the key!

Correct.

If they're in. You may do well to have a Plan B cave to visit.

So it's not just my club having had a run of bad luck with Tyning's access then ... they're often not there.
Not anyone's fault - why shouldn't they be allowed to be out - but good to know that a Plan B might be useful.

Anyway, from what I remember of Tyning's, Plan A ought to be Swildon's in the first place :)

If you do manage to get the key, be aware that on entering and negotiating the pitch(s) and then climbing down the scaffold shoring you will enter a small downward sloping flat-roofed "breather" chamber; the roof here is comprised of loose slabs which might drop away if inadvertently used as hand-holds.

Almost certainly Tyning's Barrows Swallet would have been flooded yesterday at the eight feet drop, just past the entrance pitch.
I've seen a maelstrom at that point, twice.

Had a good trip down Tynings yesterday (12th Jan) It was my first trip down there so I'm not sure how much water normally flows but I wouldn't say it was flooded, there was a good size stream flowing over Pyramid Pot though. Couldn't see any where close to belay a ladder at Pyramid Pot, there is a bit of rope with some loops tied in it, anchored to a small lump of rock in the stream bed, is this what people use as a belay?

There is a spit at just above floor level on the right hand side (looking at the pitch) about 15ft upstream. Whitelackington knows where it is - I am sure he put it there!

Otherwise I think you can find a suitable rock in the stream bed (like you did).

Unless the rope's been cut, that bit of tat, allegedly ,could be used as a bit of a handline (at your own risk) to traverse across to the LHS as you look down the "pitch". Its becomes a sort of step across, thus avoiding the need for a ladder and lifeline.
possibly??

Definite risk I'd say. I can remember everyone in our group having a moan about it. It is only just catching on that flake. Last one down and first one up always takes the risk. We didn't notice a spit there though.
