An additional dataset that is North Wales specific is http://www.hendrecoed.org.uk/Wilkinson

It’s a lot more specific for the region compared to the GB1900 data but still based on historical maps, so the accuracy varies.

Although Wilkinson's gazetteer and bibliography originally covered just metalliferous mines and the slate quarries of north Wales, it now covers the whole of Wales (including the south Wales coalfield).

This conversation is turning rather interesting. Hopefully some websites start to get used more often .

It was “before” my time . What was the other mining website with aditnow ? Was this a forum based site ?

Was it darkness below ?

I suspect you are referring to Mile's Mineexplorer website. Also disappeared with intent of a re-work and resurrection many years ago.

I rather think that Miles' site got overtaken by him starting his Go Below business and finding no spare time to do anything else!

I'm glad I copied out some of the more interesting and informative Peak District threads from ME before it finally went down, and I still hope that the AN forums can be resurrected at some point, especially with all the stuff posted by people who are no longer with us.

There's also perhaps the grandaddy of all UK mine exploring sites which is still going , https://www.darkplaces.co.uk

I believe the best option remaining now is, give it till the new year, see if anyone has made contact with Simon for an update . Then maybe namho can look at other options if not .

Just my opinion.

NAHMO...You are still quiet ? Lots of talk about 'funding' and that you can get the ball rolling?
Folks, both sites are long gone, the information or the majority of it is no longer available. Time to move onwards and upwards.

NAHMO, reach out to the the abundance of underground clubs. Their own private databases, discords and cloud storage. Plenty out there!
Get the ball rolling !

By chance I picked up a fifteen year old copy of Descent yesterday. It had a piece on AditNow in the newsdesk section covering a few bits of interesting information I thought.

Set up in 2005 by Rupert Jones and Simon Lowe.

Expanded from a set of mining photos to a forum with over 2000 members

AditNow is also a NAMHO affiliate member and has a BCA club status permitting members to gain the benefit of insurance

It had a million page views per month

Produces a mining calendar with all profits going to good causes and photography competitions.

I can't see that coming back after all this time out.

Yes I think we have already shown there there is a huge amount of data that exists out there publicly, so time to get on with collating it???

If AditNow really did have BCA club status as reported in Descent, although that is not entirely clear, then it would have to have been properly constituted as a club. Chair, secretary, treasurer is a minimum I believe. Might be worth looking into that angle as a possible ownership issue to recover the data.

I’m sorry but this is starting to sound unnecessarily aggressive. You are talking about a guy that volunteered a huge amount of his time, effort and money to create something for others to enjoy but external factors took that away. Now it seems you are suggesting going after him to get data? Honestly, I’m shocked.

This doesn’t need to get aggressive. I no it’s a sensitive subject, we need to have the conversation though . The conversation is happening for the greater good of everyone . Simon I hope would understand this as he created the website for the mine exploring world .

Hopefully namho or Chris will get a response soon . If not we can all look at moving on, if this is the overall group decision

I believe Roy.f also has a large database of
Older images ? Is this correct ?

Well I think you have misunderstood. I was only trying to be helpful. I'm not a mine explorer so have no particular interest in the AditNow data. I understood from reading this thread that the site has disappeared and contained a lot of data which was posted on it by a lot of different people. You guys all miss it but the people who run the site haven't made any comment on its future for several years. No one seems to know what is happening with it and no one really seems able to get any info about the future of the site at all or contact those who were running it. I was just pointing out the info from Descent, that if indeed it were treated as a BCA club, then that would give you another angle to find out some more about it from other members of that 'club'. Far from "going after" whoever he is, I was suggesting there might be other people out there with the knowledge you seem to want and access to the data you all seem to crave. I'll keep me nose out from now on.

There is an 'insider' knowledge of the situation that does not get posted on public forums, I think a PM here is the way to proceed.

Editing this after reading previous posts. Please all stop it, if anyone wants to know why, PM me.

This thread does grow rather tiresome.
Nevertheless, let's move forward. Bygone days are bygone.

May I suggest potentially organizing a meet somewhere where all of us who are interested in building a website and gaining the information can move forward with this collectively. ( Of course a trudge underground afterwards as well)

Let's get the ball rolling ladies and gentleman.

This is not the first time or indeed the second time this topic has come up, always with the same non-result. Firstly, Aditnow was a superb resource and Simon Lowe was an energetic, level-headed, and knowledgeable commentator and frequently mediated on the forum between warring parties. Secondly, like a lot of non-insiders here I am a little perplexed as to why the issue of Aditnow’s possible reappearance has become so “sensitive” on these pages. Who would be “hacked off” or “offended” by a respectful inquiry as to the future? If an approach to Simon is considered inappropriate now or in the future for whatever reason (although known to some it would appear) then we must forget Aditnow and start again, if we have the resources and the time, of course.
