    An informative discussion

Recently there was long thread about the BCA. I can now post possible answers to some of the questions, such as "Why is the BCA still raising membership prices when there is a significant amount still left in its coffers?"

AGM 12th November, curry, and activities for next year.

Everbody should have had the agenda for this by now. One of the most important topics of discussion will be activities for next year. What would you like to do? Easy trips? Hard Trips? Weekends in other regions? Social events? We can start the discussion here if you have any suggestions.
I also need to know who is coming for a curry afterwards - I'd appreciate it very much if you can ket me know ASAP. Thanks.

Robin G & Barry H have both indicated to me that they are keen on having the curry but work prevents them from being around during the day.

Given the nature of the Novices, Lemmings, Newcomers thread and our stated position as a newbie-friendly club and the fact that we've gained at least four new members recently but mostly have remaining trips on our meets list which are "harder" and less suitable for total beginners, I suggest that the 2006 Journal has trips on Mendip perhaps every month which would be suitable for people of most abilities (i.e. straightforward), almost as a regular event - those of us in the club who may get fed up leading such novitiate trips could easily allow the reins to be taken over by a new(ish) member(s) who has/have the ability to oversee/lead such trip(s).

These simple (and perhaps some which are not so simple) trips would enable newcomers to caving to build up their confidence, fitness and stamina and then branch off to take on more challenging trips which could be run in tandem on the club meets list - so each month there would be two trips (as has been the case for 2005) and one is simple whereas the other is challenging; newcomers who are already fit/capable can swap between them as they are deemed suitable.

I would like to think that there are many members who could set aside at least one day during 2006 when they could host/oversee/lead a trip; obvious simple candidates/caves quickly spring to mind but do not require listing here as I wouldn't wish to place anyone in the spotlight for fear of this being confused with external pressure/blackmail!

Also, I see few reasons against the simple expedient of repeating some of the better and more well attended trips which occured this year - if something is popular, it should be repeated; am I wrong on this?

Will there be a range of curries for all abilities? I am no longer a novice curry eater and may fancy a challenge. I draw the line at a SSC (super severe curry), but I would try anything from a DC (difficult curry) to a SC (severe curry).

Don't be so foolish, Mr. Morgan - it's all too easy to fall for that old trick. I tried a MC (medium curry) once but ended up with a dose of SSS (super severe sh*ts) which charred the bowl. DCs & SCs should only be attempted by competent, experienced curriers who have the relevant stamina and techniques to avoid the pitfalls which frequently befall novice curriers.

Remember, "Farting in unlined pants is the single biggest cause of following through in UK Currying".

Don't worry I will be using the recommended aids i.e. lots of lager to wash it down! I'm not worrying about charring the bowl the next day as I will be staying at Hebdens and so will be napalming his bog!

Mystery solved! - napalm consists of digested curry & lager! Better avoid smoking or naked flames when you're charring the enamel just in case!

Has this thread degenerated quickly, or what?

I appreciate that folks will arrange their own trips but I think we should have a broad selection, from very simple to 'kin ard' so people can progress.

I'm more than happy to escort a few intermediate cavers (so not you ken) to the further reach of Swildons as a local option…

Some ideas for mid week (evening) trips -

North Hill
Thurpe Lane
Stoke Lane
The Short Round Trip (Swildons)
Hilliers (to Cambridge Grotto) out Fairy

...Fannys Rift is worth a visit!

Easy through trips in Yorkshire worth looking at might include Simpsons and Lancaster Hole to WR via Wilf Taylors...just a thought.

I would like to see some more difficult local club trips as well, as my caving partners tend to be away when I am around and vice versa. However I won't be around much at all next year anyway so ignore my requests!

Keep the suggestions flowing....

BTW you do realise that the people who propose trips have to organise and lead them?

I think it's cos of his hairstyle - also a dinky badger, too - cute AND fluffy!

Oh!... almost forgot - for your sins, the committee accepted your membership application so you're now officially our new tea boy (and hardest caver).

Chris C cannot make the meeting; Mat B will try but holds out little hope.

Presently looking for replacement Treasurer... although the paltry financial reserves are hardly going to need much surveillance or hands-on management.

Someone with an abacus and the ability to use a pencil should apply otherwise we'll just pick on a victim and taunt them into accepting the role (observing standard democratic procedures, of course).

"...We may have a little job for you, Brian...".

Big Mat B will probably take you up on this kind offer, won't you?

Yes. You're Mat and your surname begins with B and you're bigger than me so you're Big Mat B - the clue was in the name, you see!

Yes there are two Mat Bs in the club but you're Big Mat B and the other is Regular Mat B. Regular Mat B isn't a dad so perhaps you'd rather be Pop Mat B or somesuch to avoid any potential confusion in future.
