Are Regional Caving Databases Fit For Purpose ?

It all seems far too diverse.
As mikem says, there are advantages in diversity. Cavers tend to be fairly independent, and the bigger the organisation the less efficient it seems to be.

There's no reason, however, that somebody couldn't create a single web page as an index to all the disparate sources. It could even be hosted on a site like ukcaving.com …

We manage to keep on top of the Peak District cave registry, more or less, and in many ways it's quite fancy now, with 3D models of many caves and systems, as well as surveys, rigging topos, photos and references. As volunteers we can only do so much, but it's been designed to be easily expandable, and our output should (hopefully) prove to be relatively straightforward to re-map to a book format when the time is right.

But I would rather keep the local registries local, rather than part of a larger national registry, if only as we're more likely to know what's going on in our area. That said, I bet many of us have only been to half the sites in our registry - there are so many!

Love the format. Very neat. All info tucked into one page.

Anywhere where I can find out what the Rn222 recorded levels are for popular sites on the bucket list? The website for Dshire caves is great but I can't find the data easily? Am I a doffus?

I've just tried adding a comment to the image in your link, to see what happens - and it registered my comment without a problem! I tried first without anything in the Author or email address fields, then I thought any validation would probably be on the email address, so entered my address there, and that was registered too.

I'm using Firefox on Windows 10.

Whilst MCRA have uploaded a few hundred of my early slides they are not captioned yet. Oddly we have not yet worked out how I can make the comment tab work it just comes up with this whatever we do --" Your comment has NOT been registered because it did not pass the validation rules". Anyone with techy knowledge know what we can do. https://www.mcra.org.uk/photogallery/picture.php?/2038/category/33
I have asked a few of the team to try it and they have had no issues.

This line is at the top of the browser screen though:

Warning: escapeshellcmd() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/mcra/public_html/photogallery/include/phpmailer/PHPMailer.php on line 1794

That's fairly standard on a lot of web hosts. It could make email scripts fails, but I don't think it would affect leaving comments.

Ruddy website. I cant log in because it needs my user name to set up a new password. I dont recall ever having a log in. How the heck do I start from scratch with a new user name and password ? Not a user friendly place and I am getting cross.

Many websites require your email address for that, and many use your email address as a user name - I would try entering your email address as username. If that doesn't work, it's possible that your browser has 'remembered' your username; which browser do you use?

No it does not work that way either. I have been told that a log in is not required in any case to enter a comment. I have tried both Chrome and Firefox. I cant even comment on my own photos. So frustrating. Cleared all the cache too.

It's certainly true for me that I don't need a login, as I don't have one but am able to comment. The comments I made earlier have disappeared - are you removing them or is something automatic doing so? Can you find the validation settings in Piwigo?

I have removed the test comments and thank you for looking.

This is a local issue to TOR and we will do what we can to help him. No one else has reported an issue adding a comment.

Hundred's of photos have been added to MCRA recently and the good work by the registrars continues including on MU6.

My last post on this as im sure there must more interesting things going on.

Yes. Thanks to " Sid " ultimately I can do the captions on another pc if nothing works. I shall send " Sid " 200 images of Withyhill then 200 images of Shatter Cave. That should keep him busy as he implies. So I have gone caving today.
