In fact, I can't recall ever seeing stal in the mines I explored in Cumbria. But there again, the only lead mine that comes to mind is the Plumbago Mine in Borrowdale.

Plumbago is a misnomer.

Plumbago (Graphite or "Black Lead) is a form of Carbon.

Most Lead mined in the UK occurred as Galena,PbS.

Yup... you're right (but I didn't go and spend hours checking)... I must brush up on my GCSE minerals curriculum . I must have been thinking about being a kid again and thinking I got lead poisoning from a graphite pencil jabbed into my arm!! What do you do for a living Mole?

I think that picture of the "trapeze" would be great for a Descent caption competition.
