BBC Archive film 1979 Pegasus Caving Club

The new BBC archive of film clips probably contains several items of interest to those interested in mines/caves or in this case a well (a water mine?). Hopefully I'll get the link right.

That seems to work, have fun seeing what else is there to be dug out.

That's really interesting. Does anyone know who the divers were?

At one point it alludes to finding a (blocked) way on; did anything come of this?

Is this a different (Acrington-based) club from the Nottingham-based Pegasus?

Pass, if you've watched it, you know as much as I do about it. As usual it was not what I was looking for, just another of those distractions that slow you down when looking for something specific.

I would say so. I knew several of the Nottingham Pegasus of that era and none were in that clip that I recognised. Also, they all seem to have Lancashire accents!

Thanks - yes, I recognised the accents immediately as they're from very close to where I was brought up.

I'm surprised I never heard of the alternative Pegasus, given I was living in the area in 1979. (I climbed a fair bit at the big quarry there; when it's in good condition there are some very fine routes.) If anyone can shed any light on the Lancashire Pegasus it would be interesting to have on record.

Maybe somebody remembers "Geoff Whittaker, the Chairman of the Caving Club." - of course it may have been a small company group or just mates (or they may have used the better known club's name!)

Completely separate from my query about the above film clip, we've been told that a northern CDG member visited this well a few years ago.

Geoff Whittaker posted this more recent footage 6 years ago (& Notts 2 trip this April):
"Three members of Th'Owd Skool Caving Club making the final dive into the bottom of the Tudor Well at Hoghton Tower.
Andy managed to bring out a couple of rotted beams and after several dives also managed to break through the submerged beams enough to squeeze a bucket through and bring out some silt containing loads of coins. Well done and a great team effort.".

Mystery solved - it was Pegasus Mountaineering Club!: He YouTubed 3 more films of the well around the same time.
"Some further progress on the exploration of the Tudor Well at Hoghton Tower. Interestingly we found the source of water seepage into the well, also a possible priest hole about 65 ft down from the surface, totally impossible to see from the top. Some date carvings on the wall, as well as one we carved in 1979 when we were originally known as the Pegasus Mountaineering and Caving Club in 1979."

Excellent! That's very useful information for cave historians.

I've found Andy Clough's dive log from 19th March 2016.
It's in CDG Newsletter 200 (July 2016) pages 9-10 and gives useful detail.
