I'm interested in any recomendations for drinking and eating out in the uk- Caving or non caving related, specific places or just things you've bought from the super market or local deli. Yum Yum

We could call it the Cavers Cuisine Guide as apposed to Michelin Guide and award them say between one to five "thumbs up". One =OK up to  Five= Scrumdiddlyumptious

Tried that Chocohilcs Real Ale today, in the  Wetherspoons real Ale Beer Festival- quite a surprise, as it not my usual pub, All I can say it's a perfect drink for a girl who likes Beer and Chocolate,  I could not drink it all the time but it had a suble hint of Chocolate which soon was over taken by the more traditional beeriness. I could drink more than two pints easily.

I rank it subjectively 2 x  (y) (y)

Please add your own secret pleasures below !

Last week I ate a baguette I'd bought for 5p. It was slightly crusty when I bought it but to give it extra dryness I froze it for a week then left it to defrost for two days. I then sliced it thinly, covered it in mayonnaise and ate with thinly sliced chorizo. Delicious.

I was up in Northumberland over half term and visited Craster where there is a kipper smokery. Upon returning home, I discovered they had a web site and will take and deliver online orders http://kipper.co.uk/  I ordered 1kg of fillets last week which duly arrived. Had two for dinner last night, two for breakfast (late) about 30 minutes ago. Bloody lovely, and they don't smell the house out like supermarket ones. I've got four left which I'm planning to do a pate with tonight. Got one recipe using cream cheese and olives, and one using cream and garlic. Off to Llandudno now to get some ramekins for pate storage.

They say there's a chip shop in Derbyshire where you can get blobs of mushy peas, battered and deep fried. (Better than what the Glaswegians allegedly do to Mars bars.)

Also - a Lancashire chip shop delicacy is the "John Bull". This consists of 2 large ovals of potato with a blob of minced beef in the middle then the whole lot's battered and deep fried. Nowt like it with a mound of chips after a hard caving trip.

Oh - and of course Lancashire black pudding takes a lot of beating; try them sliced in rings and barbcued. Beats vegetarian stuff any day!

In deference to the Yorkies, Wensleydale cheese with a slab of rich fruit cake is actually really good (high praise indeed from a Lancastrian).

That wasn't very polite OG. No-one "dissing" anyone; if you want to be vegetarian that's fine.
I just prefer a proper diet.

Roger Wilkins' cider.

Very (too) drinkable.

He was doing a very tasty mature Cheddar a while back, too.

No offence taken O.G. - I realised you were taking the mick. In fact - here's a confession. I was veggie once. I'd arranged to move into a house with 5 other people and casually agreed that we'd eat together and each cook on consecutive nights. It was only after I'd actually moved in that I suddently discovered, to my horror at the time, that they were all devout vegetarians! Anyway, I went along with it for 6 months and I learned all about proper vegetarian nutrition (5 main food classes, complementary protiens based on amino acid excesses and deficiencies, etc).

Some of the stuff we cooked was actually really good. There were occasional disasters - and I think what made me decide to try and convert everybody was one particularly aweful fruit curry that someone concocted. I was sneaky about it - like filling the house with the smell of frying bacon on frosty mornings - and I managed to convert all of them except one. He was very determined and he's still vegetarian the last I heard (full respect to him for sticking with it).

I'm certainly not vegetarian now but I still eat quite a lot of veggie food because it's nice, if properly done (NOT ready-meal veggie stuff). Also because I know quite a bit about the influence of too much meat on things like colon cancer, circulatory disease, etc. So there you go O.G. - I know exactly where you're coming from.

If you really want to know my take on what folk should eat it's quite simple; eat as varied a diet as possible. Having a bit of everything means you'll not get too much of anything which is really bad for you and you still get to have the odd "unhealthy" treat. Enjoy!

I cannot honestly say what my favorite meat is. I love them all, but if we were supposed to be vegetarian then answer me one question:
Why are all animals made of meat then?
;)
