Beginners trips

Has anybody got any suggestions for slightly obscure beginners trips? It's brilliant that new people keep asking to come caving, but I'm getting a bit bored with the usual repertoire of easy caves. Can anyone suggest a beginners cave in the dales that ISN'T...

Long churn/Borrins moor/wilsons
Calf holes/birkwith/old ing
Thistle/runscar/katnot
valley entrance

great douk- middle washfold. same as others though i think you probably just forgot it!
Yordas, assuming they are competent beginners and its dry.
crack pot in sawledale.
sunset, chapel le dale.
there must be others too, what about doing the first sectioons of other caves then turning round? e.g. roaring to the second pitch.

Short Drop is good.

County Pot / Wretched Rabbit in Easegill is excellent, but best if you know your way around a bit.

Bull Pot of the Witches.

Sleets Gill is ace, but be careful with the water conditions and weather.

Magnetometer as far at top of Caton Hall is super, provided the said beginners have good enough clothing for the wet crawl.

That's a few to go at!

Cliff Force Cave near Hawes is an ace novice trip. If you can be bothered to make the journey. Mistral in Ease Gill is a nice novice trip as well, with the advantage that there is plenty to do and see.

definately mistral!

But it's really muddy - so in line with the wellies thread, make sure the beginners have wellies that fit or they will be leaving them behind!

Roger Kirk Cave is good fun if I remember right. I did it after coming out of Sunset on my first Dales weekend with SUSS many years ago. Good varied through trip.

Dow Cave is a good simple trip, which is generally OK even in wet weather.

Scoska is quite impressive

Cherry Tree Pot, also supposed to be OK in wet weather.

Goyden Pot and Manchester Hole are very good, but beware of wet or windy weather.

How about Dale Barn? Only ten minutes from Ingleton.

The through trip from Dismal Hill (original entrance) to Old Ing is a micro-classic, with lots of action in a small space, but not suitable for big beginners.

Jingling Caves/Rowten Cave

Simpson's Caves

Borrins Moor

Red Moss Pot?

.. and Heron Pot of course - two abseils and a wriggle through water to finish.

Skirwith. near the road, easy access, and lots to look at. Bruntscar, but a bit of a long walk and the midges are terrible. Valley Entrance, but I imagine that's another you've forgotten to put on your 'bored' list. Then there's that huge thing on Storrs Common with several little passages to look at, including a muddy bit to wallow around in.

Skirwith - short answer is I don't know. Only went in myself this year, and that was with a complete beginner so we didn't go beyond the waterfall.

Judging by NC, I'd say not very far - "above this the way divides. To the R a short crawl emerges in a stooping passage. The passage continues as varied walking and crawling to two ducks in a low bedding plane and a large chamber. Beyond the chamber is a sump .... Passage on L above waterfall is 30m long to a choked bedding plane"

The original cave is 1km, but a good part of this is beyond the sump and the bit between the current opening in the middle of the field and the cliff seems to have been lost.

Black Reef Cave is interesting and involves wading up to neck level.
Gatekirk Cave is pleasant enough.

Both easy access though a bit short!

Thanks folks, lots of new things there to have a go at. And also a few that I'd forgotton to mention that I've done a few too many times. Mr Buttcombe, you are in danger of having your beard hacked off if you suggest sunset one more time...

Nothing per se, Frog. It's just when you do it 4 or 5 times in a year
as we did in 03 you tend to not want to see it again for a loooong time!!!

.. you wouldn't want to be a professional caving leader then?.... 8-10 times in a week is more like the frequency of visits in popular caves on Mendip.
