What is the atraction in doing every single cave in the guidebook?
I guess every cave is pushing matters but doing a significant number of them is good and can be rewarding - some people do miss out on some interesting caves as a result of not doing the smaller stuff.. They might be short but they can still be good!

Oi Dave H! Watch where you're poking that olive branch
Indeed, if you thugs keep breaking branches off what are we supposed to rig off!!!!

When you no longer have a list of caves that you want to do, you have finally lost your interest in caving.
You could at that point always start from the begining and see if they are as good the second time around!

No - you go digging!
If you're that way inclined or maybe armchair caving is worth a thought... It sounds like a much easier option :D

I hate the idea of ticking caves off one by one from a guide book. Especially if you had to do the ones that werent particuarly exciting just so you could tick em off your list. Life is too short!!

That set me thinking about what unexciting caves I've done. Culverin probably ranks quite high on that list

There's several squalid little holes at Ribblehead, and along the Winterscales Beck. But even those I've enjoyed finding, then either exploring and backing out, or deciding it's just too low, wet and muddy even for me. And since most of the NC authors follow the policy of not advertising particularly nice bits, there's always the wondering exactly what is round the corner.

I think for me the difference is between 'well, I've seen that' and a cave where I think 'I'd like to come back and have another look at that'.

Even if the cave has been unexciting, I can't remember a caving trip that has been anything but interesting.

Middle Scar Cave is another good little trip at Ribblehead. I did my first ever cave dive with a bottle through the sump entrance. I seem to remember a nice little canyon streamway going upstream from the other end of the sump. It ended at an awkward climb up a small pitch, I believe the cave continues beyond. There is a grovelly dry entrance that bypasses the sump - go and have a look! I think you could spend an enjoyable day at Ribblehead just poking around a lot of the caves there. I remember Roger Kirk's Cave being good fun - aren't there several entrances?

Middle Scar was discussed here a couple of weeks back - when I looked last year, the bypass entrance was blocked. Is it now unblocked, do you know?

Roger Kirk's has 5 entrances if you include W Sink, which is separate in NC but which now has an easy through route into RK.

I agree with you about Ribblehead and we have :)
Haven't so far been into Scar Top, so that's high on my list. Supposedly good inside, though route finding through the entrance area is a bit tricky.

On that subject again.. A month or so back I was passing Ribblehead so went and had a nosey at the entrance (no caving gear)..

Saw- the obvious sump entrance - to the side of that was what would have been a dry entrance - piece of rusty metal by small hole that looked unenterable..

But going round the shakehole - before reaching the rising - there was an open hole with the sound of the stream - is this a different dry way in or just a short cave - anyone know??

Why did you have to go and post that message, Kay!

Now I'm going to have to go and have another look too. Want to join me?

Yep! Otherwise we're going to have another round of posts trying to work out which of us has seen what where ;-)

We could do a public service and check out Middle Scar at the same time ;-)

As you look at the sump entrance the dry way in is to the left hand side. If it is blocked then an hours digging would have it open. I don't remember it being very long.
