I can't get the 1:50000 data to show up using dpegg's link.
I've managed to display it as an image overlay in google earth but its performance mudst be linked to server load.
If anyone wants to try it:
display the relevant area in google earth ( the BGS server may refuse requests if the area displayed is too big - at 13:00 today there was no problem getting about 15 sq km of mapping displayed - approx 5 * 3 km so the limit could be 5 * 5 km )
Then from the menu <Add> - <Image Overlay> and paste the BGS map server address of
http://maps.bgs.ac.uk/ArcGIS/services/BGS_Detailed_Geology/MapServer/WMSServer? into the Link box (the address of the WMS server) and then click on the "Refresh" tab and then on the "WMS parameters"
Select the BGS server in the top box (if not displayed) and Google earth should connect to the BGS server and download a list of available map layers into the left hand window eg [T] GBR BGS 1:50k Linear features (Style = GBR BGS 1:50k Linear features). Layers are selected for display by adding to the RH Box . Clicking OK takes you back to the image overlay screen where you can:
1 adjust the opacity of the image to show the google earth picture through the overlay
2 Set the view based refresh to "After camera stops" - how long after you stop panning in google earth before the BGS overlay is refreshed
3 the view bound scale - I interpret this as to what percentage of the google earth display has the map displayed on it eg 1=all the screen and 0.1 would be a small rectangle in the centre.
