Cave Monitoring Competition

When you are out in the Peak District don't forget to do your part for conservation. Take the time to download a Cave Monitoring Form from the DCA website and take a few photos. Submissions will be entered into a random draw for £50 from Starless River at the end of the year.

A list of up to date submissions would be useful, it would be annoying to spend a day going round Giants for instance, to then find out someone had done it a couple of weeks before?

Having completed one for Crock Pot last week, I think there's a good few areas for improvement for this system. Eg example photos on the sheets could be useful, so people can try photograph the same thing. Shouldn't take many minutes to alter the forms after they have been submitted, I'd even volunteer (!). And also it seems strange when you're asked to rate the condition of a phreatic passage out of 5!

However, it does make me wonder what these are actually used for. Is there not more helpful ways us cavers could support the maintenance of SSSIs? I like trying to win £50, but moreso if it's actually useful...

Well I since it is all about monitoring ...any submissions are useful. If you look on the DCA website under conservation you can see the SSSI sites that are monitored. Photos are important and some photos are better than others so happy to receive them!

Hi Rob. Photos are to keep a record of what state things are in over time. I do think that forms can be improved , photos of the features would be a bonus. Thanks for offering. You could take one and make notes as you move through the cave and then feed back on the form itself....
