Thanks Jason that website is really helpful.

I too hope that Cavemaps.org is back online soon. As a relatively new member of a pothole club, it's quite difficult for me to get my hands on surveys and therefore Cavemaps is such a useful tool for me. It looks like for now I'll have to rely on rigging guides and route descriptions.

Sam,

I think that's a really useful post, it's too easy for those of us who've been caving twenty, thirty or forty years and have our own collections of books, paperwork etc to forget that!

Cheers,

Tony

Fantastic news! I will probably make electronic copies of all the available surveys just in case it goes down again though.

Something that's always puzzled me about the surveys is that most only appear as thumbnails.
To take a random example, http://www.cavemaps.org/cavePages/Nidderdale__Eglins%20Hole.htm has 5 surveys, only 1 of which has a link to a full size survey.

This is not intended as criticism in any way, I just wonder if I'm missing something - how do others use the thumbnail-only surveys?

As I understand it, it's to do with copyright. If he has permission to make the survey available, he puts the full size version on there. If he doesn't have permission, then he puts a thumbnail on there together with authorship details so you can see what surveys have been done and how complete they are, and have an idea as to which club to approach to try and get a copy.
