Multimap have just replied to a forum request

It looks unlikely for access to the 25K Maps (with a workaround hack) in the Open API.
It's not Multimap but again the Ordnance Survey that is holding tight on it's own data (paid the the bank bailout-ers the tax payer)
(there is huge potential for OS to make money with a little innovation using their data).

So until it is sold (next year?) we will have to sit tight or use direct tile access until told off...

"Hey Rambler - glad you like the new Explorer maps!!!

You are correct that they are not in the Open API at present. We work with a large number of data partners, such as the Ordnance Survey, to get as many of the sources of data that you see on Multimap.com into the Open API.

We've worked with OS to get the data which features in the OS OpenSpace API (such as the 1:50k Landranger maps), also published in the Open API. Unfortunately, the 1:25k Explorer maps are not currently available through OpenSpace, so we can't currently make them available in a product such as the Open API. We can however make them available through our commercial API product (Multimap API).

OS are a key partner for Multimap, and we enjoy a close relationship with them. We will ensure that they are aware of your comments.

Poor GPS'ers out there with one of the cheap Garmins (such as yellow eTrex, Geckos, old school) which only support 6 characters in the waypoint names might find the following file useful:

http://www.union.ic.ac.uk/rcc/caving/FILES/northern_caves_cavemapsorg_etrex_6char_pack.gpx

It's all the Northern Caves (1,2 & 3) waypoints downloaded from cavemaps.org on 2009-07-01, with the waypoint names compressed to 6 chars by stripping out the spaces, the 'the's, and ignoring redundant waypoints within .0003 deg in lat + long (approx 33m). Name space collisions were handled by deleting the last character of the name and replacing it with an ascending numeral.
i.e. "Valley Entrance" --> VALLEY
"Valley Exit" --> Valle1

This results in a waypoint file of ~320 points which quite nicely equips your waterproof yellow friend for action in the field.

I used this python code as a starting point: http://ywwg.com/wordpress/?p=345

Some of the names could certainly do with hand editing to make clear which is what, but I think it makes a definite step up from scratching your head wandering what "THE BO" and "THE MO" are!

Incidentally, if you haven't yet joined the GPS fray, the waterproof Garmin eTrex H with super-duper reception and 20hrs+ battery life is on Amazon.co.uk for ?69 currently (monochrome display, no maps), the big brother Garmin eTrex Legend HCx which has a micro-sd card, USB connection, a colour screen and supports maps (such as the free open street map) is at ?142.
