Upper Eastwater Farm was sold as one lot at auction tonight for ?455,000 to a telephone bidder.
We therefore do not know who the new owners of Nine Barrows & Sludge Pit caves are.

Best behaviour, smiley faces and good-neighbourliness will be the new regime at the Wessex from now on, then, to curry favour with the new rich owners of t'farm. Such delightfulness will serve well towards negotiations for access.

Are you talking about Boveways Cave?

More seriously, Al, the MCRA has Sludge Pit Hole whereas I've always thought it was Sludge Pit Swallet. It also gives as one alternative Contour Cave when my memory says Contour Cavern.

The cave seems to have had several names. The one used most was Sludge Pit Hole as far as I know. Interestingly my first log book entry referring to a visit was 24/2/68 and I then referred to it as Contours Cavern as I did on a repeat trip in July the same year. However everybody else seemed to be calling it Sludge Pit Hole and that's the name I have used ever since. Somewhere I should have some slides I took but these seem to have disappeared or been misplaced over the years.

I think you'll find that was the old regime as well.    :read:

Well, maybe not best behaviour.

I was caving in Yorks. Spring 1968 Peter but I did both 9 Barrows and Contour Cave with you 13/10/68. My log says " Priddy Nine Barrows Cave " and " Contour Cave". Nine Barrows had just been reopened after the entrance collapsed. We went to the sump in Contour Cave. We climbed up to an upper rift passage near the 20ft pitch then back down a 30 ft pitch to the streamway. I did not take photos in Contour Cave as it was " damp and steamy ". Took 4 photos in Nine Barrows.

I believe it was called Contour Cave as the entrance was mistakenly believed to lie on the 900 ft contour.
