It seems the landowner has indicated that folks are more likely to get a response via that method than email. Presumably you could still use the old-fashioned 'brute force' method of ringing them up though? ;)

I don't think that people should be excluded from anything for the reason of not using technology. My grandparents suffer from the same thing with their interests. However I do think the caving world could be more accepting of new technology, and while some parts seem to be very progressive. Other parts do seem stuck in the past.

Actually Mikes off hand comment strikes a particular nail on the head as a lot of previously unknown, at least not generally known, facts have come to light as a result of the Ukraine war. People were puzzled as how so many Russian senior officers were being to successfully taken out. Its was of course from their phones. Videos on Youtube show 'private' conversations between soldiers and their mothers or family. Their exact locations easily identifiable. Some evidence that a phone, which does not actually switch off unless you take the battery out, can be used to eavesdrop conversations.

However, this is not my reason for not having one, its simply that i would never use it. Its all email with me, off a desktop system. Archives go back 20 years or more, am I a dangerous man! LOL.

I had a mobile in a car when they were actually radio telephones, and one of the first cell phones. Then the wife died and then I retired, well sort off, but was at home all day, so the mobile fell into disuse. I now actually hate the things as I see with dismay how they are taking over peoples lifes. Planet of the zombies. No not for me, "Beam me up Mr Spock".

I understand why people choose to not use a mobile phone. But as a young person it would be almost impossible to go about life without one. Such as a caving club organized mostly through WhatsApp and needing a mobile app to authenticate logging into some of my university computer systems. I also find a phone incredibly useful to cave with. As it's a camera. And also a place to store descriptions and surveys effectively. And can be used as an effective tool for surveying.

I am well aware that not everybody will use a phone, however I don't think that should stop certain caving systems being useable through a phone. The digital destination board that SWCC run is good example. As it very useful but they haven't uninstalled the physical board either. I don't think a mobile revolution should remove what already exists.

How come discussion is not open to further replies? (this thread left locked accidentally while moving off topic messages to here - now unlocked - edit by moderator)

If you contact with whatsapp then you can text (what happened to whatsapp & FB messenger being combined, which they suggested several years ago?)

You can also still get mobiles that don't have GPS (or other facilities) in them, but it is getting more difficult not to.

Latest iphones actually have lidar scanners in them that allow you to photo-survey as you go...
