Isn't the MCG also one of the richest clubs in the UK while simultaneously also being a charity?
Have only just seen this posting - dont know how I missed it before.
I wouldnt know if we (Mendip CG) are one of the richest clubs, as I have no idea what other clubs are worth. We do have a purpose-built headquaters, which is probably why you think we are "rich". And we are not short of a bob or two. Amazing what you can achieve from the proceeeds of a few Barn Dances and jumble sales in the 1970's. Having a good insurance policy in case of any "accidents" (eg your cottage blowing up) helps, too.
What I fail to understand is why cavers who are always hard up, never think of joining our group? For a modest fee, you get access to massess of tackle (ladder, lifeline and SRT) which is renewed frequently so always in good condition, access to one of the most comprehensive caving libraries in the UK (we exchange publications with many other clubs in UK and abroad), keys to most Mendip caves (CSCC, CCC amongst others), etc etc. And we even have dosh available for digging. For those living away from Mendip, you can sleep at the cottage for only £2 per night or £40 per year!
The charity bit is important, as it enables the group to reclaim the income tax paid on subs, and to avoid paying tax on our group income. We also get 80% reduction on our Council Tax bill for the HQ.
The object of the Group is, "for the benefit of the public, the furtherance of all aspects of the exploration, scientific study and conservation of caves and related features". And we have the money available for this (sorry, cash payments only available to MCG members, but you are all welcome to join!)
