I was well disappointed to find I could post an answer to Mr Sparrow's post, so I thought I'd start my own.

So anyway, as the speleological year rolls to a close, what were peoples most memorable moments, best trips, greatest acheivments and biggest cock-ups (The latter being the most interesting of course!)

..............

(I'll post mine when I've thought of something suitable)

Started the year off with a first time in Titan through trip to peak - Hard to beat really.

Finally breaking into that rift drafting rift in bagshawe comes pretty high.

Most memorable: Staring at a fellow caver's welly soles for 2 and a half hours as we made our way very, very slowly through flat-out crawls in Slaughter Stream following a stretcher during a rescue.

Best trips: Lost John's

Greatest achievements: Was involved in introducing a number of novices to caving with the Orpheus - also a trip to Thailand (mot much of an achievment but we pushed a fair amount of new cave and I enjoyed it).

Biggest cock-up: Managing to take wrong route in JH Cartgate last Saturday and getting covered in mud during call-out last Saturday...

Indeed, I think Andrew Moorhouse deserves some sort of special medal for providing us all with such high quality entertainment.

(AM if you're reading this then we salute you! :worthy: )

Best trip - without a doubt the Cueva del Valle - Red del silencio through trip at Easter. 10km, 600m vertical, 12 hours, and we only got lost twice. Once led us to a very nice stal gallery, the other to a bloody scary loose boulder choke, which looked different on the way back out

Did enjoy rigging Stream Passage Pot as well.

Well I'm not a Brit, and this trip was not in Britain, and technically the experience was not even underground, but there were Brit cavers along, so I guess it might squeak in.

My best experience of 2004 was whilst on expedition in Peru in September. After a day of caving we camped outside the entrance at an elevation of about 4700m above sealevel. It was very cold and cloudless, and the sky that night was so clear. Not only were the stars different than what us northern hemisphere-types are used to, but being so far from artificial light sources, and being up so high with the air being so thin, I have never seen stars that clear before. There were a pair of Andes Ibises roosting in the cave entrance, and they seemed to enjoy how it magnified their squawking, and demonstated this several times thru the night. That piled on top of all the other experiences of the exped made it the best moment of 2004 for me.
