Dear Team

I am looking for a copy/scan of the 'pamphlet - report' produced by Jack Pickup and Graham Balcombe.

Recording their 1936 visit to Ireland? I have the 1937 which alludes to this previous trip.

I'd be most grateful.

Love, Light and Peace

Are you sure you mean Jack "Pickup"? I can ask him directly for you - but before I do can you confirm that you don't mean Jack Sheppard?

The CPC library may be a good call, as it was formed well before the date in question, so there may have been a copy acquired by the early members for their collection.

Pretty sure there isn't one in the NPC library but the NPC didn't start until just after the war (1946).

There is, of course, always the CDG librarian to ask.

A long shot is also the YRC librarian; that club was formed in the 19th Century when Queen Victioria still reigned. The club was very actively caving in the 1930s, so probably collecting anything related. Another of the longest standing Dales clubs is the Gritstone Club, who celebrated their Centenery a couple of years ago but I don't think they have an extensive caving library as such.

parties led by Graham Balcombe and S.J. Pick had spent three Easters caving in Clare in the years 1936-8
Ireland 1936 the record of the party of S.J. Pick (Leicester) in County Clare, Easter 1936, by those two, is held by BCL, they don't seem to have 1937, so might appreciate a swap of scans

S.J.Pick's obituary is in Wessex journal 150, vol.12, which is available on their website

From 1943 FRCC journal (presumably same):
So far as is known, 114 members are serving with His Majesty's Forces, and three are prisoners of war, namely, Captain P. N. Bartlett and Major E. M. Viney in Germany and Lieutenant E. J. Woodsend in Italy ; our
thoughts and good wishes go out to them all, and to the numerous others who are doing work of importance in many spheres
Bartlett is also mentioned in this article about a map marked with Clare caves belonging to Railton in sheetlines - the study of OS maps:

G.S.Gowing's obituary (he was in first party to descend Battleaxe pitch):
& his recollections edited (presumably) by his son:

Gowing was mostly in Northern Ireland, but his reflections do mention a visit to Clare (the above obituary doesn't mention Ireland at all):
Most of the YRC articles come from 1936 and 1938 journals, except the previous two - 1985

I have a copy of Caves and Caving 1 with Bartlett's article which lists pick and brown of the Wessex, balcombe and shepherd of northern cavern and fell club, Watson and bescoby of BSA and Bartlett of YRC

Pick's obituary is actually in no.149 and is only a brief note mentioning his passing (150 is the index for that volume)

Wessex circulars list the following lectures (no other mentions):

Tuesday October 26th 1937. Meeting with the University of Bristol Spelaeological Society, 8.15 p.m. in the Geography Lecture Theatre. "A Tripper in County Clare" by C. Wyndham Harris

Tuesday Nov. 8th 1938. Meeting of the Bristol Spelaeological Society "Caves in Ireland and Elsewhere" by P. N. Bartlett.

23rd January 1950 R, A. Bendall "Caving in Co. Clare".

Dear Team

Thank you all for your support and guidance.

I am particularly obliged to Mary Wilde, for her prompt service scanning the 1936 report.

I shall pursue these many sources.
