Caving shops no more

Some readers will remember Brendan Brew's caving shop in Ingleton; he had some gear of his own brand "Brock".

Incidentally, before Inglesport was where it is now, it used to be a right good fish and chip shop!

?Basil Brush? (how he hated this monicker) continued to flog stuff under the Brock brand into the 80s - I (and others) used to sew up bags, harnesses etc.

In the 90s there was one in Settle.
Cave & Crag (in first thread I linked to already)

No, I don't think so.
Cave & Crag was in the Market Square.
The place I remember was well before that, coming in from Skipton, and on a road to the right.
Just looked at a street map - it was on Chapel St., which is the one on the right past Station Rd.

Well, at least there's still a right good fish and chip shop in Ingleton!

Don Morrisons in Sheffield, where I bought my first Texolex helmet and Magic Mountain in Hope where I bought my first Petzl ascenders.

Though they were primarily climbing shops, they both held quite a range of caving gear, e.g.helmets, Premier carbide lamps and rubber boots. In the late 70's early 80's dedicated caving harnesses hadn't been invented.

Blacks in Hanley were similar. I remember being up there in the 60's & pestering my dad to take me to look in the window at the carbide lamps, ropes, ladders, helmets etc.
I went back years later & was told they weren't allowed to sell dangerous sports kit anymore - go round to Jo Royles, they sold it!

There was an outfit on Shirley High Street in Southampton that specialised in Rope Access kit, use dto advertise in Descent.  I think they were called COMSAC?  I think they were still going well into the 90s.

There used to be a climbing shop on Portland (I think it was called Rockies) that sold a small selection of 'caving kit'.  From memory they sold Ecrin Roc helmets with Speleotechnic headlites, belts, harnesses, perhaps the odd tackle sack, obviously krabs & rope.  Don't remember them stocking any oversuits / undersuits or knee pad though.  I suspect that was due to boiler suit / old clothes being the norm (and still is largely today as it's too hot in all that clobber).  Knee pads - well I don't remember anyone having those either, perhaps some used knee pads from B&Q.  I certainly remember discovering such luxuries when I started caving up North (Mendip).

Magic Mountain in Hope was Joe Taskers shop if I remember rightly. Joe (and Pete Boardman) was lost on a Bonnington expedition to Everest in 1982 and led to the Boardman Tasker prize for literature which has spawned some fantastic outdoor books over the years.......

So what's left?

Starless River, Inglesport, Cave Climb (Cheddar) - anywhere else?
Caveclimb shut down their unit at Christmas. So nearest to Mendip now is Up & Under in Cardiff.

E Bay seems to be quite popular given the regularity that our club members seem to outbid each other for oversuits....

I bought the ascender from Joe himself.

COMSAC, Rockies, Magic Mountain & Don Morrisons all get a mention in the "good climbing shops that closed" thread

Ben Lyon for a while had a caving shop based at Whernside Manor. It was the fore runner to Lyon Equipment but a retail caving shop. Importing Petzl kit and Bluewater rope amongst other things. There was Lyon Ladders before that.

The Three Peaks Cafe in Horton used to sell caving gear at one time. I certainly bought some kit from here.

Also Ellis Brigham in Liverpool sold some stuff in the late 70's and early 80's. Remember buying my first caving helmet from them.

Just remembered, the YHA Shop in John Adam Street in Covent Garden, London used to sell Premier carbide Caplamps ("stinkies") eons ago (the 70's anyway).

LC Products , Lightwood Road Buxton sold wet suit kits in the 70s. You got measured and she cut out a pattern for you and you bought the neoprene, glue and tape etc.  Originally I bought thin unlined neoprene but progressed to thinker lined neoprene which after you made your suit could be returned to her for stitching.
My firs thin version did not even survive one trip down Simpsons. I tried to tape it up the next day by wrapping masking tape round the torn bits.

My fried manage to cut out one leg one way and three legs the other so he had one leg with half the neoprene inside out. Happy days!

Note - the photos is me after Simpsons. I certainly dont look like that anymore
