Saw the notice in the window when passing a few weeks back. They've been going for over fifty years, so definitely deserve to enjoy their retirement.

Pete's Eats website says
"

We are closed

Pete's Eats is under new ownership and is currently closed for renovation."

I was a regular there in the 1970's, I remember Eldon's Mouse serving. Is it the case that the business is not being sold?

Also John Beck was regularly employed there for a time.

This is sad news (for us) but I'd like to offer my thanks to Phil, Chandra and all former staff at CS, as I was always well looked after as a customer - and congratulations if this is due to well deserved retirement.

When is the actual date of closure?

I would say it's a loss but I'm not a regular at all, I did buy my last Oldham cell from there back in 2000, by mail order. It came so stoutly packaged that I still use the box it came in! Currently holding a trove of Descents that I must get around to re-re-reading.

From what I'd heard, they've been trying to find someone to take over for several years now without success.

Sad news indeed, and as said, Phil has been trying sell the business for some years. He himself must be well into his seventies by now, so retirement at some time is a must. I have just visited the website and nothing on there though.

Remember going up there for their harnesses and belay belts.
(Yes I know belay belt is not politically correct now but it's what we called them and used them for!)
Also Oldham cells and lamps and their ladders. :)

That's not what I'm seeing. For example the Petzl Stop appears to be available, and slightly cheaper than the two well-known suppliers (not sure about P&P though).

As a youngester I avidly read their catalogue, I can picture it now! My first knee pads and tacklebag came from them, via the North Pole and Santa Claus. A shame it’s going. Best wishes to the owners!

The catalogue was a thing in its own right, I remember it well. The website, no disrespect to Phil, is a bit uninspiring.
