just been ask this for a french-english translation can any one help??

is 1)stals or something similar i.e straws ??
2) traversing/abseiling (what do call going down in a tightish rift i.e bum on wall, feet opposite)

---

Can anyone tell me what is the correct term for :
1. concretions fistuleuses
2. the expression "a l'egyptienne" describing a way of descending a steep
slope / cliff. It appears in a list as follows "....ramping, toboggans, a
l'egyptienne,..."
Both my queries appear in a tourist brochure describing activities in the
Ardeche.

(EN) Stalagmite = (FR) Stalagmite (f)
(EN) Stalactite = (FR) Stalactite (f)
(EN) Straw = (FR) stalactite de paille
(EN) Traverse = (FR) traverser
(EN) Abseil = (FR) descente en rappel (f) rappel (v)

(FR) concretions fistuleuses = (EN) pipe flowstone (staws?)
(FR) a l'egyptienne = (EN) I Haven't got a clue!

That's my translation, but I only did the compulsory 2 years of French at school (and that seemed to only be learning irregular verbs!)

An Egyptian is a partucular move in climbing where you bring a knee inside your body line and point it down....and if you work that out from this description, well done!

Does a similar job to back and footing so assume it refers to such e.g. in a chimney or rift.

There's a cave passage over here called Walk Like an Egyptian; it's a tall narrow rift that requires you to turn your torso sideways (i.e back to one wall and lead with one shoulder) while keeping the legs pointing forward (so your knees can still bend), with arms outstretched and head turned facing forward. So you form an upright, two-dimensional figure and insinuate your way thru.

Thats surely some desperate climbing in a cave when you have to start doing egyptians!

Wouldn't have to be. It's a side on position similar that mentioned in an earlier post. One foot on opposing wall, one foot under backside.

It's only to alleviate pressure on the arms during climbing so it's not stretching credibility.

Alright maybe so, didnt think like that. i though of them as more trying to reach sideways for a hold. instead of kind of like sitting on your foot for a rest. now i'm confused and gonna spend a while stuck muttering in a chimney.

thanks for all the posts even though i'm still not much wiser on the "a l'egyptienne" one someone must know i suppose i'll have to wait till a met a french caver someday. Although i think stu has probably hit the nail on the head, although it seems out of context perhap someone knows the english for the other two, ramping and toboggans.
